Mastercard Airport Lounge Access in India 2017

By | August 29, 2017

These days when i signup for a new credit card, i always prefer Mastercard over Visa for one reason – complimentary domestic airport lounge access. Most Mastercard Debit/Credit cards issued by various banks are eligible to avail 2 Complimentary visits/quarter across Mastercard affiliated lounges in India. Needless to say, Mastercard has the biggest network of lounges in India compared to Visa.

Why Complimentary lounge Access?

Ever wondered how Mastercard is able to survive the Indian market while Visa comes up with lots of advertisements wherever we go? Mastercard, instead of going with high budget promotions, they rather provide real value to the customers by giving extensive travel benefits like complimentary lounge access.

This way, they are able to grab more customers who actually spend. Also they can convince bank about the lounge access features which Visa doesn’t provide on basic variant. Similar to Priority Pass, Mastercard doesn’t own any lounges but are affiliated with existing lounges to give access to its customers. The list gets updated every year and the latest lounges are mentioned below.

Kindly let me know if there is any life time free master card offered by any bank except HDFC?

Also if any bank offering life time free card with PP as well ( similar to Regalia, with free visits)?

So since the lounges are “rented” by priority pass or mastercard to allow you access, does it make sense to save the priority pass complimentary visits (using their own card) for international travel and use up the free mastercard visits for Indian airports? As PP is worldwide…

Is there a difference anyway – are they 2 separate things? Mastercard lounge access and PP access.

Also when you will visit lounge, concerned person will validate your card. If the charge amount is Rs 25 it means you are eligible if its more means you dont have any free visit in your account.

The regalia page of HDFC says that domestic usage of Priority Pass and the 7th international usage would be charged at 27$.

We only have PP from Yes First Exclusive. It gives us access to all lounges in India and abroad as per the PP website. However, Yesbank recommends to use the card to access domestci lounges under the Mastercard Program and use the PP on international lounges. However, this is just a recommendation and not a rule so the PP can be use in any lounge (domestci or international). I don’t know about PP from other cards though. However, AFAIK, PP from Infinia, Citi Prestige and Yes FIrst Exclusive allow to access any lounge that is there on PP website list.

I don’t have first hand knowledge of the same. But as per their Infinia Website, All Primary and Add on Card holders have unlimited access to all 1000+ PP Lounges in the world. If that is the case, then the Indian lounges will also allow PP visits. Also, Infinia Users also get 4 complimentary lounge visits per quarter through the VISA/MasterCard lounge access program in India. However, what they don’t mention is whether the lounge access is for only Primary Card Holder or Add On Card holder too. I assume that the VISA/MC lounge access of Infinia will work for both Primary and Add On card Holder just as it works for Diners. Note: Yes First Exclusive gives unlimited access to Primary as well as Add on Card Members even through the Mastercard program on top of the Unlimited PP.

Infinia allows using PP in both domestic and international lounges for both primary and add on members without any charge.

          3. Amex Guy

Infinia PP does not give complimentary lounge access in domestic lounges, anymore. The thing is PP lounges – domestic lounges is still over 1000. 🙂

Since you have Diners Black, which shares same CC and concierge with Infinia, it is easy to confirm.

Prestige PP works for domestic lounges. But Prestige itself does not give any Visa lounge access for free like other cards directly with using card. You have to carry PP. No Dreamfolks visits.

          4. Siddharth Post author

“Prestige itself does not give any Visa lounge access”
Its Visa Infinite privilege isn’t it? This is interesting.

Btw, Prestige linked Priority Pass is issued directly by PP or its the same like with HDFC PP?

          5. Amex Guy

Prestige PP came with card, kind of like Yes bank. No, it’s not a Visa Infinite privilege. Visa partners with Dreamfolks, banks have option to buy access in blocks and provide them to members. Citi has taken a nice approach of simply relying on PP for every kind of lounge access. Not only I don’t have to think which lounge should I access with what card, you kind of get more respect from lounge staff on using PP in my experience. It’s all unlimited, worldwide.

As for Amex, the PP that comes with Plat Charge does not work in domestic lounges anymore, just like HDFC. So it looks like it is only Yes and Citi Prestige that works. Citi one would continue as they are relying solely on it for lounge. I expect Yes will cease buying India lounge access through PP soon.

@Amex Guy: It seems as of now YFE and Citi Prestige are the only two cards which are providing unlimited domestic lounge access too over PP. I’ll not be surprised if Yes too removes the PP access for domestic lounges in India. While it is a concern for Infinia users, I don’t think YFE customers have be worried as YFE already provides UNLIMITED lounge access to any domestic lounge in India through their MasterCard for the Primary as well as Add on Card Memebers. So as of now, you can enter two people on your card in India. One through the card and the other through the PP. That is perfectly fine. Once they remove the PP access for domestic lounges, this extra perk is over. The biggest problem with Citi Prestige is the very high mark up fees. I wish someday they do away with the mark up fees al together as their US counterparts. Till then YFE is the one the best (or probably the best) Indian cards to go for foreign transactions. Even though Prestige does give double miles on Foreign txns. For FFliers they might Prefer Prestige just for this. Eventually you pay ₹4.13 for getting those extra 4 miles.

RIP ICICI cards. There’s been a drastic change in Lounge access, utility bills reward accumulation & fuel transaction reward accumulation. ICICI HPCL AMEX has reduced complimentary lounge access to mere 2 per year.

    hi.
i tried hdfc jet priviledge world debit card at t3 domestic plaza premium at delhi. worked with ease. was charged only rs 25. good facility but a lil bit crowded.
though all of us can now afford complementary lounge access by using paytm payments bank rupay platinum debit card. it costs only one time charge of rs 125 to get the card and further it provides 8 complementary lounge access each year at a cost of mere rs 2 per swipe.
i have tried it once as well at the same place.
guess lounging in india was never such easy before.
    happy lounging people

Rs.25 is charged to check the validity of the card. it will be reversed by your card issuing bank in two or three days.

Don’t worry. That token amount is just for verification of ur eligibility. You won’t be billed for the same.
I can say this bcoz my HDFC Regalia First cc was also charged with 25/- on 3-4 ocassions while lounge access, but never billed in reality. Better check ur cc statement. I am sure this amount won’t show up.

I dont think the charges are ever reversed. I have so many cards and not once the charges have been reversed.

I have not been levied any lounge access charge till date by HDFC on my Regalia First cc. I have swiped it 4 times in past 6-7 months.

Though while swiping receipt shows 25/-, but it never appeared under my cc expenses. So no need to reverse from the bank side, as it was not billed.

I have recently applied for a Regalia First MasterCard primarily for lounge access. What I am concerned about is that the list of complimentary lounges on HDFC Regalia’s site is significantly smaller than the list on Mastercard’s site. (For eg. Terminal 2 in Delhi is not present on HDFC’s site). Are the lounge visits complimentary for a Regalia First Mastercard holder, even if they are not on HDFC’s site?

Have you used your master Card for free access at that lounge before.. And even if I do use it and it’s not a valid lounge they notify us there and then right? So all I may lose is the 25 rupees they charge for validation?
Never used the master Card Lounge program before and hence I am asking

Do NOT use Priority Pass in India, you will be charged – unless that PP is issued by the super Premium cards like Infinia etc. (But re confirm this also)

Just swipe your regular card for lounge access. The people at reception will tell you if it’s valid or not BEFORE you swipe. Show them the card and they will tell you.
