Hands On Experience with Amex Jet Airways Credit Card

By | August 29, 2018

As you might know, I already hold 2 Amex cards (Gold charge card & Plat travel card) and yet the joy of using American Express cards never stops. So I’ve been looking for the 3rd Amex card for almost a year.

While i was busy with life, I missed a wonderful opportunity on Plat Reserve with its Supp. Card offer. The offer is still on but it’s not as great as before. On other side, Plat charge card with its current benefits is not something i’m interested in, atleast for now. So I ended up going with Amex Jet Card.

If you’re looking for the features & benefits of Amex jet card, check out the full review here: Jet Airways American Express Platinum Credit Card Review. This article is more about my recent experience with the card.

American Express Jet Airways Credit Card

Why Amex Jet Airways Card?

JPMiles Earn Rate – No Cap

  • Earn 8 JPMiles / INR 150 spend

I’ve been using ICICI Sapphiro card that has similar JPMiles earn rate for domestic spends but ICICI has upper cap of JPMiles that you could earn per year. The Jet card issued by Amex donot have any upper cap, which is good for high spenders.

Another good thing with this card is that you get JPMiles even on spends less than INR 150. Not a big deal for many, but for those who do tiny expenses now and then, it adds up quite well.

Unlimited Lounge Access

This is one of the very few cards left over in the market that gives unlimited domestic lounge access. While that’s a great benefit, it only gives me an extra option to choose from 10+ cards in my wallet!

So to save time & energy, the thumb rule i follow to pick the right card for lounge access is the card/bank on which i feel i enjoy less benefit. Currently i’m using ICICI Cards to access lounges 😀

Access to Amex Lounge

Speaking about lounge access, American Express has its own Lounge at Delhi Airport and this card is one of the very few that can give access to it. It’s one of the lounge that I’ve been waiting to visit for quite sometime.

Preferred Hotels Benefit

  • Benefit: iPrefer Elite Tier / Preferred Hotels

I wish to try this sometime or other as i’ve few properties on mind to visit in near future. Let’s see if it helps to get a suite upgrade apart from the unique Welcome Amenity.

Application Process

This time I applied the card at the new TFS Lounge – Chennai as I used to have good conversation with these sales guys, the fav. one being:

  • Me: How do these travellers rely on your words about card benefits/features and apply?
  • Sales guy: I try my best to explain the benefits and if I see the customer looks double minded, I ask them to read online reviews on a website called “Cardexpert”

So as a token of appreciation for spreading the word, I decided to give him a count to get closer to his sales target 🙂

Within a week, I received the card in hand. I like the design as the blue Amex logo goes well with the silver background of the card. What do you think?

Credit Limit

The card came with a very low credit limit, even-though my gold charge card allows a charge of 20L, its actually 30L now. As soon as i saw the limit, I called up customer care to see if they can relook into it.

They politely rejected, but mentioned that I got low limit because the charge card gives me huge limit, which I don’t think is the real fact.

Maybe Amex always starts a new card with low limit?

JPMiles Transfer

I’ve been curious to see how this JPMiles transfer works with Amex and now I’m quite impressed with it.

Amex temporarily holds the JPMiles (like reward points) you earn and transfers them in one shot during statement generation. Let’s say if 15th of the month is your statement date, the JPmiles transfer works as below:

  • 14th – JPMiles debited from Amex Ac
  • 15th – statement generation date
  • 16th – JPMiles shows up on jp account

So it’s good to see that JPMiles gets transferred pretty quick on statement generation. To compare, HDFC transfers JPMiles in a week after the txn and ICICI transfers almost after 2 months(!)

However, the fastest is with Axis Vistara Infinite credit card that transfers your points in ~4 days from the date of txn.

How to apply?

You may apply offline at airport as I did (or) just apply online and get instant approval. Using below link will get you 2,000 JPMiles extra.

Bottomline

Overall I’m happy to have this card in my wallet and looking forward for my next adventure on Jet Airways business class. Unlimited access to Amex & other domestic lounges makes it one of the best Jet Airways Credit Card in the country. Joining fee too is well worth it while renewal fee remains a question! Let’s see what the retention team could do on that when time comes.

That all said, it’s the 10th active credit card in my wallet now, which makes it extra special to me 🙂

When you consider JP Miles transfer, I believe IndusInd is much more faster.

I use IndusInd Jet Airways Odyssey Amex credit card. I always see JP miles being posted in my account in 2 working days.

    Hi Siddharth,

The annual fee they waived upto 50% for me with a good spends on the card. When I asked them to waive completely they said it had never been done before on this particular card since it’s an co-branded Card.

You should have tried plat charge they had the offer of 50K Taj vouchers or 1 lac MR points and complimentary Reserve card.

Anyways this card is got features like visa assistance and concierge services which is really good.

    Happy swiping 😀😀

Plat Charge: I’m saving it for next year. Features refresh is expected to come along with Metal card 🙂

Visa Assistance: Can you please share your experience on this? Someone else commented recently that its not up to the mark.

    Hi Siddharth,
nice to see you finally reviewing this card, have been using this for quite a while now. One thing which you probably missed is extra 10k jp miles which get credited if applied through cards.jetprivilege.com and a base fair waived off award ticket.

also, got through a slight workaround to avoid renewal charges for this, 10k inr i feel is way too much. i went for the closure of my earlier account, and applied yet again for the same card through the portal the same day. worked out seamlessly fine, and got the new card worth 5k+gst and effectively 20k jp miles + award ticket, which i wont have got had i gone for renewal. my spends were ofcourse more on DCB & SCB Ultimate, so didnt have that bargaining power .

Btw, congrats on completing the decade :).. i may not be much far myself though;) Thanks again for your informative posts time and again

Applying on JP Site: Its 2.5k now. Anyway i feared it would delay the process. Is it as fast as applying directly with Amex?

Closing & Re-applying: Good but adds extra lines on CIBIL report. Hope Amex don’t bring their welcome bonus rules from USA to India.

Yes, you can transfer limits between Amex “credit” cards. There are multiple time limits in this case. Will write a separate article on it.

ICICI LE: After 1 yr based on spends, then on with ITR, 6 months once.

Amex doesn’t always start with low limit, I applied for Amex Plat Travel one year ago with ITR of 14,00,000 and they gave me limit of 2,75,000, I did give them call after six months ago and recently and my limit was increased to 3,55,000 and then to 5,75,000 without IRT and purely based on spends which were around 6,00,000 in one year.
Please not that Amex Plat Travel has credit limit upper cap of 6,00,000.

I feel unless one gets 10000 + 10000 JPMiles with Amex Jet, it is better to go for ICICI Jet Saphiro as
    1. We get both Visa and Amex variant
    2. 10000 + 8000 JPMiles offer or 10000 JPmiles for Rs 2500
    3. Dragon pass membership
    4. Higher JPmiles for foreign transaction spends. 5 miles/Rs 100
    5. Lower renewal fee

  16. Siddharth Mehta

I was offered this card 2 years ago but i rejected plainly because of high joining/renewal fees. I feel Sapphiro is a much better option as earning rate is same and the cap of 60k miles is okay for me as my higher spends happen on DCB and YFE. Well, that’s my opinion. Good luck on the new card.

Amex guys are really wonderful to speak to you. Quite knowledgeable. My favourite pastime at airports, especially if the lounges are overcrowded and flights are delayed is to rag Amex executives. I pretend to be interested when they approach me and patiently listen to the details of their entire range of CCs and charge cards, all the while punctuated by me rolling eyes and exclamations “Wow! What a wonderful offer”, “Ok so you get 10K Taj voucher if you spend Rs. 4 L in a yr”.

    Hi CE Readers,

    Got something Interesting to Share.

I had to board the flight from Chennai to Delhi via Air India during August 2018. Since I had Priority Pass Card, I normally prefer the Travel Club Lounge on the 3rd Floor (Facing Gate 5). For a change, I preferred Travel Club Lounge (Facing Gate 1). Domestic / Air side.

I was approached by Mr. Dharanidharan (+919884919391) in the lounge – He checked with me whether I’m interested in applying for an AMEX card.

I explained him the following #

    1. My earlier AMEX application during May 2017 was rejected.
    2. I cannot share him ITR / payslips.

He immediately asked me whether I had traveled by Business class; fortunately I had so, during the preceding last 3 months. He requested me to sign on the application forms (Among the 4 variants cards, I opted for Jet Airways American Express Platinum Credit Card). He clearly explained the features and charges . First Year Fee: 5,000
2nd Year onward Fee: Rs. 10,000 + Applicable Taxes.

    Then the following happened #

    1. I signed the relevant pages of the application form. I also signed on another form which spoke of the charges.
    2. He collected my boarding pass, Aadhaar card, Passport copy & PAN, promptly photocopied it, self attested and returned the originals.
    3. Scanned the Business class boarding pass and emailed it to his Regional Sales Manager (on the same day)
    4. Received an email from Executive-Business Support with the subject “Greetings from American Express !!! Consent Mail !!!” requesting me to “While replying this mail Please reply to all OK TO PROCESS !!!” (X+2 day) – I had to confirm on the my Address / Fees / KYC details & copy of the MID.
    5. I received en email from “American Express” with the subject “Thank you for applying for the American Express® Card” along with the application reference ID. (X+2 day).
    6. I received an email from “TrackMyApplication” with the subject “Update: American Express Card Application” with the subject “Congratulations, Your American Express® Card has been approved. You will receive your card in next 10 days.”

Yet to receive the card. But I’m surprised and curious too! Will keep you posted!

I like it this way, just don’t make it ’20/20′, then it becomes obvious..:-)

By the way I love your reviews. Great job Sid.

Amex platinum card is giving 40k Taj vouchers or 1L points, so effectively comes at less than 20k fees. I wish they cover the fees every year like this and not for first year only

Hey siddharth I am based in nagpur and I have been trying to get this card since last 4 years. I am having a good ITR and already holding infinia since last 5 years.Unfortunately they provide the amex cards only in the cities mentioned on their site and my city doesn’t feature in their list. I also tried to upgrade my father’s basic amex card to jet variant and he’s a member since 97 but even they are not allowing that.

    Hi,
I have a very strange query… 🙂 I have maxed out my Axis Vistara Infinite Card ( 7.5L) all milestones achieved…now put it in cold storage, 4L spent on Amex Plat Travel card for me and my wife intact doubled it. I was contemplating an AMEX Jet but correct me if I am wrong, can’t I use my point accumulated on Plat Travel card to convert into JP Miles or use my points against tickets. Is there any other benefit of accumulating JP Miles apart for Lounge access as my Standard Chartered Ultimate card (Primary and Suppl) provides me the benefit of lounge access. AM I missing anything here as I would also be considering that I would have to pay 10K renewal fees the next year.

I got a call from Amex last week for Platinum reserve card with first year free based on my Amex Corporate Card. I also have a Gold charge card. My usage would be very low or maybe negligible as I am using mostly Yes First Preferred card or HDFC regalia. I use the charge card for 6*1000 transactions (load to paytm). Looking at the card, I could not understand why the card is so expensive (10k from 2nd year onwards). I have more than enough lounge access that I need from Regalia and yes cards. Shall I still apply for the Plat Res Card considering its free for 1st year? Any added benefits that I am missing? Thanks!

Well you get the Plat Concierge service, the Taj Silver Epicure program, Golf privileges. If these benefits are important for you then you will be able to make good use of the card. And these are the ones that attract the 10K fee from the second year onward.

Plus you get taj epicure dining membership…..and many specific offers on hotels, luxury brands etc.

Thanks! These do look enticing, however, I travel very little and don’t usually eat out at expensive restaurants. I wouldn’t know how to use the benefits. I might checkout the existing golf privilege with my existing card and if I like it, I will think of getting more. For now, i will skip.

If i were in your place then i would skip on Amex offer and put all my spends on YFP and try to increase limit on it every six month and eventually get upgraded to lifetime free YFE, then you would get golf benefits and as well and unlimited domestic and international lounge access for you and your entire family with add on cards,
You can also join the band wagon and try to upgrade regalia to DCB and enjoy 10X reward points,
I would never rate any concierge in India worth the money.

Platinum reserve is a different breed of card, its targettes towards those who spend on luxury. I wanted a free taj epicure membership and its worth it. You get frequent offers on luxury brands like michael kors, coach etc. offer from hotel chains like hilton. Eazydiner prime membership, invitation to events – cocktails etc……i dont spend much in this card. But in 2 months have recovered more than 3 times the fees.

Thanks! Most of my spends are on the yes card these days. I have even put my rent through redgiraffe on the yes card. The YFE card is high end as the basic need is 2L per month income. I dont think they would consider me for an upgrade with my current usage, but I will try.

For the Regalia, netbanking does not show card upgrade offer and even customer care denied. They asked me to fillout card upgrade request form and send to Chennai. I am too lazy to do this.

      Hi,

Amex MMT to MRCC is quite possible, they don’t merge limits from Gold to Platinum.

Write a mail to them possibly they will be able to do it.

      Cheers,
      Kiran

My document shelf is full of credit card, add on cards, old cards and bank accounts welcome kit. Can I get rid of it? How long should I keep this kits? And is it safe to throw them in Dustbin?

Kits can be put in bin. Just the welcome letters with limits etc can be put in shredder

Amex Jet Platinum card is free for life time till you have Jet Platinum status. I am having this card for last 10 years as free. Amex lounge at Delhi is real good. Mumbai International airport GVK Lounge is also free.

Do you still suggest we hold on to this card? OR should we move to a AMEX Plat REserve?
