HDFC Diners 10X Program Gets Further Extended (Smartbuy, Partners & Intl txns)

By | April 4, 2018

A lot of users got a hit when HDFC knocked out Amazon from their 10X partners list during Nov 1st Update but at the same time they added something that still kept the cards worthy of being kept in the wallet.

  • HDFC introduced 10X via Smartbuy (This was common for ALL HDFC Credit Cards excluding the JP cards).
  • HDFC also introduced 10X program for International txns done on your Diners Cards. This was a Diners Club International Exclusive offer where in you could rake in extra points for your international purchases.

HDFC have now extended the 10X program (for intl tx , smartbuy & partners) even further to 31st March, 2018.

HDFC Diners 10X Program Extended through March 2018

10X program added a new merchant – Domino’s and Tata CLiq now have been added to the 10X merchant list. So the current merchants in the 10X program are :

  • Domino’s (New Entrant)
  • TATA Cliq (New Entrant)
  • Lifestyle
  • Bigbasket
  • Uber
  • Bookmyshow
  • Swiggy
  • redbus
  • Luxehues
  • Caratlane

10 X offer was already extended till 31st March 2018 for the conventional partners. However, now HDFC has extended the 10X via Smartbuy as well as International Transactions too till 31st March, 2018.

What does this mean?

You continue to rake in the points. All points as per their website will be posted after 90 days. One peculiar thing that is happening is that many of the users including me are getting 10X points for international spends even within the month or max by 1st day of the next month. The system doesn’t wait for the billing cycle to be over.

At the same time, as per their latest changes, the 10X points via their conventional partners have not got credited from November 2017 and December 2017. This is due to the new rule that they have brought in by which you’ll get those points (For spends between 1st Nov 2017-31st Dec 2017) only after 90days after completion of the billing cycle of the txns date.

So please wait for the points to be credited. Also try and keep track of those points.

Regarding the 10X program through International Program, one easy way of getting points is via PayPal Checkout for International Merchants. There are many websites which do not accept Diners Club Cards. You can still use your Diners Cards there if that merchants accepts PayPal as PayPal allows payments to be done via Diners Club cards. This is a very easy way to rake in extra points.

Do let me know how you plan to spend with your Diners Cards in this new year in the comments section below.

10X points comes if you buy in foreign currency. PayPal allows payment to foreign merchant in foreign currency. PayPal is a one stop solution for paying in India or abroad. If the merchant in India say charges you ₹500 and accepts Paypal then PayPal will allow you to pay through your Diners Card in Indian currency. For this you won’t get 10X points. But the benefit is you can use Diners irrespective of whether the merchant support Diners Card or not. (Usually most merchant’s support only Visa and MasterCard). But say you want to shop at a foreign merchant say for eg, eBay.com and here you want to use your Diners Card, even if the merchant doesn’t support Diners but supports PayPal, then PayPal will allow you to pay with Diners. And at the same time since you are paying in foreign currency, you’ll get 10X points. Amazing isn’t it!!

By paying at Paypal or any other International site, we also attract Finance charges + Foreign currency Markup along with the said transaction. Isn’t it ? Nevertheless, I know few sites for Domestic Airline booking & Hotel bookings in Foreign Currency, specifically, Travelocity.com, Smartfares.com, Orbitz.com.

If You pay say $100 to an XYZ merchant in USA through Paypal, you incur the same charges as you would have when you paid through the card directly on their website. The payment will consist of $100 in INR + Mark up that your credit card company charges. So say for eg Dollar value for today is $1= Rs 63 and you paid $100 then you will be charged Rs 6300 + 2% of 6300 + 18% GST on 2% Mark up.

Paypal currency conversion charges are way higher than HDFC or Amex. I paid on Klook.com through Paypal and the exchange rate worked out to be more than 52 ( for SGD). The HDFC rate was around 48.5 for the same day (after adjusting for all charges)

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

The idea is to not use the native PayPal currency conversion. If you’re using Visa/MasterCard then PayPal allows you to use your card’s native currency converter. Just chose “Let the merchant bill me in my local currency”

          Hi Ashish,
The sites you mentioned above are showing bloated prices than on indian sites. This will take away the benefit of 10X points.

I saw one site that was showing almost same prices viz. ctrip.com but it doesn’t except Diners.

Do you know any site other than mentioned already above that shows correct fares?

Gosh I purchased a mobile from tatacliq through smartbuy on 30 december. Fingers crossed i hope i get the points. Had they informed earlier i would have bought directly from tatacliq on 1 jan.
But international tx extension is good for me as i am going to hongkong. Alredy saved a lot through it in last 2 months. Just that they should have increased the limit.

With that limit it’s very difficult to upgrade. Almost impossible. However, if you have a income of above ₹1.75L/month in that case you can upgrade. Otherwise increase your limit to at least 4 lacs. Credit game is that of patience.

That’s bad luck. I’m sure you’ll get the points. The only help would have been that in case of direct purchases, you would have got the points in the very next cycle. Here, you have to wait for 3 billing cycles.

Phone. My case was pending for quite long time. I was supposed to get the points in Jan for purchases made in September. Finally after 2 months of investigation and escalation, they credited my September points in March. The reason is we have Diners Black, so the agents for Infinia and Black are different. They are more cooperative, knowledgeable and helpful than the regular HDFC CC. You communicate with email, if not, then complain to their higher channels, like nodal officer and others. Also, always keep screenshots of the purchase order page.

          3. Rohit

Agents for Infinia and Black are different only for the concierge desk, isn’t it?

You can even buy hotel points to rake in points.
Or pay for flights by booking through the international sites of Indian airlines.

Oh yes, you can always do that. You can pay anywhere in the world where Diners Club card is accepted. I am talking about the scenario where the foreign merchant doesn’t support Diners Club/Discover Cards. They only support say for eg Visa/MC/AMEX/PayPal. In this case also you can use your Diners Card through PayPal and still get 10X points as the merchant charged you in foreign currency.

Yes, these rates are same for all users. You’ll get maximum benefit only when you redeem for flights. For DCB, you can get Croma and similar vouchers of ₹2000 for 4000 points. Effectively you get only 50p/RP. Whereas on flights, DCB offers ₹1/RP returns.

No. It won’t be counted as international retail purchase. So in all probabilities, you won’t get any points for ATM withdrawal. Neither in India nor abroad. Besides, you’ll pay hefty cash advance fees as well as interest on the sum. For foreign location you’ll incur mark up fees too.

It seems that the points one accrues on international spends, Smartbuy and the regular 10x are separate from each other and therefore the total points we can (theoretically) accrue is 60,000 in a month.

Also, interestingly we can buy some items from Amazon on Smartbuy – such as a oneplus phone (Search you shall see it). It seems like that leads us to Amazon (and we have to enter some card details before being redirected) to get the 10x offer BUT if one looks closely to the terms and conditions of the 10x smartbuy offer it clearly says “Shopping from Flipkart” – has anybody had any experience with this?

Also, it really beats my why HDFC bank’s communication is constantly so unclear that they can create silly doubts like these…

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

25K bonus on Smartbuy, 25K bonus on 10X partners like Tata cliq, Uber etc and 10K bonus on International Spends. Total- 60K max bonus per month through DCB.

          3. Siddharth Mehta

Spend about 2 lakhs in a month on various DCB offers and you can collect as much 66.6k points (60k BP + 6.6k RP).

The spends should be like 83.3k on smartbuy + 83.3k on 10x partners + 33.3k on international spends.

      2. Manav Narang

I can buy stuff through tatacliq via two routes. 1) compare and shop on smartbuy; 2) directly on tatacliq.com

Now my problem is that both options have different spend caps correct? If I buy using option 1, this will be counted towards the smartbuy cap. If I buy directly on that website, it’ll be counted towards the partner brands cap, correct?

Or in both options, it’s the partner brand cap?

        Reply
        1. Abhishek Roy Post author

    A) salary credited to account post tax deduction
    B) Gross salary without tax deduction as per pay slip
    C) monthly salary as per offer letter

Off-late HDFC is trying to dilute the rewards program albeit through unscrupulous means. This I noticed today when I paid Big Basket bill through my Diners club black credit card however the biller name was PAYUIND which seems to be payu wallet. This means they probably will not credit my account since the biller was not Big Basket and we have limited ways to fight back on. Would be great if you can take this further and how to highlight.

The tie up is definitely not China only, I’ve used it in several countries. It is a fight to get retailers to swipe as they aren’t willing to. But persist. The transaction will for though if you swipe on UP machines.

Also, always swipe, and not dip Discover cards in UnionPay machines. Even in China. For some reason, dipping always gets rejected for me.

    3. Amex Guy

In Thailand, your card would work on UnionPay machines. Sometimes retailers don’t know. Just tell them to swipe on UnionPay machine.

Also, in my recent experience UnionPay machines have issues with Discover chip cards in general. Ask the guy to swipe on UnionPay, not dip.

As for purchases from Amazon, will the following method work. You search for an item on SmartBuy that leads you to the Amazon site, and you go to Amazon after validating your credentials (phone # and the last four digits of your DC card). After landing into Amazon you can add what ever you want your shopping cart, and then pay by the DC card. Will that attract a 10X reward?

I have tried this a couple of days back, and it is too early to say is 10X will come as a result of this. If any of you have any experience on this then let us know. If this works, then you can get anything on Amazon at 10X.

Also online payment on Indane website while booking gave INR 5 discount. Though not much but Petro surcharge waiver was really cool.

Exactly. I just had to chase them for the 9X points not getting credited for a Flipkart via Smartbuy purchase. Interestingly, I already got the 9X points for a Flipkart purchase done on 23rd December 2017 on 7th Jan. But I’m yet to receive 9X points for Flipkart purchase done in September month. Had I lost track of it, I could have lost so many points easily. Lets see when they credit. Currently they are “investigating”.

Actually Amazon is the pretty awful in reporting referral purchases. HDFC can’t do much until Amazon reports them. Amazon takes months to even report JPMiles referrals. Some retailers like Big Basket report instantly.

I agree with Amex Guy, for shopping I use cashback site and Amazon always delays cashbacks and most of the times I need to followup. For Flipkart its credited before its due and no follow-up is required.

  26. Anoop E S

why can’t HDFC just be transparent about reward points (like ICICI)? They can easily incorporate in their monthly statement. How are we suppossed to track this? in 10X scenario, reward points are just like cash…

This is only possible if the merchant is a direct partner. You can go to say for eg when Amazon was a partner, you could have visited it from JP website and paid through Diners.

To be very precise with the dates, the HDFC DCB purchase was on Oct 13, 2017, mail from JP was recd on Nov 17 and the points were credited on Dec 27. The 9X points were received in the statement on Nov 19, 2017.

Ask them that as per the form, even when I upgrade from Diners Rewarz to Diners Club miles, then my reward conversion is 60% as per your upgradation form. Now Diners Rewards are valued at ₹0.30. So going by this equation, if Rewardz card gives 60% conversion ratio, then Diners Premium whose points are valued at ₹0.50 should be giving 100% conversion ratio.

The fares of flights in Smartbuy are from Yatra and Cleartrip. Besides, if you want to purchase something, go to compare and buy, see which website offers the lowest price, then by clicking the link there you’ll be asked to give in your details of card and phone number. This way the purchase is “Through Smartbuy” and you qualify for 10X points.

      Hi Ashutosh
The etc in Abhishek’s reply has Trident Privilege.
Trident and Oberoi are part of the same platform.
Using Trident points for Oberoi (for non peak stays) presents good value.

Till Jan 31st, Club Vistara has a ‘sale’ on going for award redemptions on many routes.
That’s one current option you can use.

If you fly a lot internationally then transferring to BA & Kris Flyer makes sense.
BA Avios has good value on non peak international redemptions in BA, One World alliance & intra EU flights.
Kris Flyer, especially if you intend flying their Suites class on A380 makes great sense 🙂
The best part for me is you can check for & book award redemptions for Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance & Other airlines (miles required & availability) on Kris Flyer log in.

      Good luck !

Card conversion rates are not equal to Interbank Conversion rates. So whether you use MasterCard or Visa or Diners Club, it’ll be always slightly greater than what is displayed in Google (Interbank Conversion Rate). Having said that, did you actually use Diners Club Card on Alibaba.com? As far as my knowledge goes, Alibaba accepts payments through Alipay and Alipay allows only Visa and MasterCard. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

HDFC doesn’t negotiate fees as far as my knowledge goes. You were lucky that your RM could waive off your first year fees. Either way, if you spend more than 1L within 90 days, your joining fees is waived off. If your overall spends for the year have crossed ₹5L, then you won’t be charged ₹5K as annual fees. If it isn’t then you would be. Either way even if you get charged, you’ll get 5K points worth ₹5K. So the only thing that you’ll pay is 18% GST thatll amount to ₹900. I think that isn’t much of an ask considering such stellar reward structure of the credit card. 🙂 So stop worrying and enjoy the befits dude. 🙂

Just realised that one may not be able to use their Diners card on Redbus for bigger transactions. I was making a pilgrimage booking (>10k) and it said that DIners is not accepted for this payment.

the 10X points via their conventional partners have not got credited from November 2017 and December 2017. This is due to the new rule that they have brought in by which you’ll get those points (For spends between 1st Nov 2017-31st Dec 2017) only after 90days after completion of the billing cycle of the txns date — Does any one have screenshot of this terms and condition. The 10X points where not credit for the transaction done in december, when raised the issue to customer care, there are asking, where was this comunication shared, they are asking to share the sms or email mentioning this.

Thats true. I had a word with HDFC CC Customer care and they confirmed that a “Communication Email or Communication sms” is compulsory for fulfilling the offer criteria – be it 10X, or Cashback, or discount. Only if you have received a communication email or sms. only then you are eligible for 10X reward points. Show them the proof of communication if not received the 10X rewards. Likewise, HDFC had many promotions in past few months, but not everyone received the communication. Some of their promotions were –
      1. Nov-Dec Spends campaign – Some customers received a specific sms like “Dear Classic Customer, Get additional 3000* Reward Points* for every spend of Rs.55000 during Nov-Dec’17 on Credit Card ending XXXX *T&C”
      2. Win Double Reward Points for all your spends. Expires 2017-12-31 – Meet the spends target received on Offer communication within the offer period. Win 2X Reward Points for all spends during the offer period (16-31 December 2017) upon meeting the spend target.
      3. Get Free Amazon Voucher worth Rs 250 on doing 4 transactions – Complete four transactions in the promo offer period and win Rs 250 worth Amazon voucher.
      4. Get a Chance to earn 10 Times Reward Points on your spends in Jan. – Spend a minimum of Rs 15000 till Between 10 Jan -31 Jan to qualify. Offer Valid between 15th Jan – 31st Jan’18.
      5. Get a Chance to earn 10 Times Reward Points on your spends in February. – (7th – 28th Feb) Get a Chance to earn 10 Times Reward Points on your spends with HDFC Credit cards. Spend a minimum of Rs 15000 till Between 7 Feb -28 Feb to qalify.

I had queried the customer service for some discrepancy in partner reward points for November. I am told that the reward points are added in chunk of 150/- i.e. if I do a trxn of 290 then I get only incremental reward points of 45. According to me I should have got reward points of 87. This is just an example but is this info correct?

EMI wont fetch points has been clearly mentioned everywhere in HDFC website. However, what about wallet loading. Has anyone tried wallet loading. I tried my Diners on few wallets and few of them fetched reward points. If this is possible, one can anytime earn 10X points during spend based offers.

Just wanted to touch base with the people doing Amazon Smartbuy transactions through Diners card. I have not yet received a single point for all the transactions done till now starting Nov’18, and have raised the concern with CC support team. They are yet to revert with the points, and have shared multiple complaint IDs for all the transactions. Now each day, they are raising concerns for all these complaint IDs, mentioning that we cannot verify if this is a smartbuy transaction. Luckily, I have saved all the screenshots of all the step by step transaction, and plan to share all of these. But even then, they may revert with their standard reply that these items shouldnt have been added in the cart beforehand (as I can see it being mentioned now very prominently, which wasnt there before). Quite worried, as my total transactions done on Amazon smartbuy run into lakhs during this period. Anybody else got the points posted?

I have already mentioned in the my posts and comments before that, you are supposed to add the product to the cart ONLY after landing on Amazon Page from Smartbuy Page. This is the standard norm for any kind of referral. If this doesn’t happen then the automatic systems won’t pick up the referral. I am sure that HDFC will still goof up but still be sure from your end.

Have you got the Amazon Smartbuy transaction points? I was not aware of this cart thing while doing the initial transactions in Nov, as it was not mentioned anywhere. Have taken care of it for my later transactions, but have not received the points for them even then. Nov txns have already completed the standard 90 days, hence raising the concerns for these.

Thats not the case with jetpriv only hdfc keeps tweeking their t&c every now and then to avoid giving points that is too much to land on smartbuy page and then add to cart and then hope to get points they need to show transparency right after the transaction goes through it should be verifiable whether it will accrue points or not its a great loss to this guy who purchases in lakhs and not get bonus points especially if he has dcb.flipkart on smartbuy is comparatively better.

Does Amazon take standard 90 days to post 10X points? why it is taking these many days? I have transacted on flipkart, got 10X points on day 3 itself, even for flight tickets on smart buy I got 10X points accrued on day 3, will try amazon next time.

The add to cart thing is almost with every referral benefit website. So I usually find the products that I want to buy, add them to cart and them move them to wishlist or favourites. Almost all sites have this option. Then go back to the shopping site through the referall site, hdfc cmartbuy in this case and just move the items back to cart 1 by 1 and place the order.

In my experience, all the tracking websites have some limitations. Here are few things I do (applicable to both smartbuy or any other referral shopping website):

=> They track via cookies (dedicated referral links generated) and so may not be able to track sometimes if the product opens in a new tab. I copy the link from the new tab and paste it in the same tab which was opened from the tracking website.

=> Don’t open multiple tracking links from the referral website. This generates new cookies and previous tracking is lost. If items are already added to cart, start over clean slate.

=> Some ad blocking addons on browsers may interfere with the tracking. So I disable it for both the referral website and the shopping website, sometimes even pause them entirely.

=> The tracking link (cookies) expire. So I usually try to complete the transaction within 5 minutes of clicking the referral website. Logging into both referral website and the shooping website before hand and saving address/card details speeds up the checkout. For smartbuy, they have dedicated website for flipkart, so its easier to track for them.

=> Amazon does not consider tax (gst) value in the sale for referral rewards. So the total points rewarded are almost always less. Not sure about amazon through smartbuy as I havent done any shopping yet through smartbuy on amazon. Flipkart doesn’t have this issue on smartbuy.

=> Never open any other referral website in the same browser as you are trying to shop. If absolutely needed, open in different browser. Google ads play a major role in referral shopping -> Dont open websites like Facebook etc with lots of ads. They may force redirect your referral cookies to themselves and hence impossible to track.

=> Always keep screenshots of shopping for future reference, including the offer page with T&C. They keep changing and the customer care will blatantly deny it on your face.

=> Try to avoid shopping through mobile browser. The tabs sometimes get killed in background leaving no evidence of the tracking.

=> If you are shopping for someone else, dont give a discount based on future cashback/reward points credit. Instant discounts are fine. Pay them the difference only when you actually get the cashback/reward points credit. Remember, the cashback or extra reward points may not always come as we expect/calculate.

Remembering everything above is difficult and with luck, even if you miss to do few things above, the sale might still be correctly tracked or exactly opposite may happen. Have patience and follow up. You may find a customer care executive who understands and fixes your issue. Good luck!
