RBL Bank Popcorn Credit Card Review

By | December 19, 2019

It looks like RBL Bank is in love with Bookmyshow as they already had 2 cards for movies: Initially they launched Fun+ card which was then replaced with Movies and More card and now they’ve come up with a 3rd variant which is called Popcorn credit card, the name though 😀

The major difference between the previous variants and this is that this one is primarily dedicated for Bookmyshow Movie benefit alone and so better rewards. Here’s a quick review of the RBL Bank popcorn credit card.

RBL Bank Popcorn Credit Card

Joining Fees

  • Joining/Annual Fee: Rs.1000+GST (Renewal fee waived on Rs.50k Spend)
  • Welcome Benefit: 4 movie tickets up to Rs. 1,000 at BookMyShow!

While they haven’t mentioned anything on reversal of annual fee, ideally they reverse the fee on 1.5L spends, not sure if this card is excluded from that usual criteria.

Also not sure if the welcome benefit is applicable on renewal. If not, it maynot be worth it. (will update on this shortly)

Rewards

  • Monthly Movie Offer: 2 free movie tickets (Value: Upto Rs.250*2=Rs.500)
  • Spend Requirement: Rs.5,000 in a “billing month”
  • Reward Rate: 10% (Eff. Reward Rate: ~5%)

Even though 10% reward rate sounds amazing, remember that you anyway get the Bookmyshow Buy1 Get1 offer with many credit & debit cards. So considering that, you get only ~5% return with this card, though that’s very generous too.

But most of the time you won’t “exactly” use the Rs.250/ticket amount, hence that further reduces the reward rate a bit, yet still good.

Features & Benefits

  • Weekly cashback: Surprise Cashback Up to Rs. 250 every week, with assured cashback of Rs. 25
  • Fuel Surcharge Waiver: Up to Rs. 100 p.m (applicable on transactions between Rs. 500 and Rs. 4,000)

Bottomline

  • Cardexpert Rating: 4/5 [yasr_overall_rating]

This is definitely an amazing credit card for movies as it comes with generous 5%-10% return on spend. That said, its important to note that you do not get any other regular rewards, instead that’s replaced with the new concept called “Weekly Cashback” which is interesting.

Its obvious that you could expect high cash backs every week if your spends are higher. Will have to explore this hands on to see how much % they’re giving away.

Overall its undoubtedly a great card for movie buffs at-least for the first year. Hoping to see more such generously rewarding credit cards from RBL bank.

Honestly love the design and the vertical nature. Wish more cards move to this vertical design. HDFC needs to up their game in terms of Card Design IMO.

But nowadays almost all debit/credit card give min.25% discount in tickets. Imo there will be less takers for this card.

Their card approval system sucks, I have a good credit score and several super premium cards and still have a tough time getting this card for some reason!

And I don’t want any cards from RBL bank but they continously call me for taking RBL credit card. I have admitted defeat just ao they would sto calling me and gave documents to an executive for lifetime free(for me) RBL Shoprite credit card, although, I would rarely if I would or won’t use it as I have multiple cards that have much better offers😅.

Does wallet loading on Paytm and other wallets count towards the monthly spend requirement of Rs. 5000 to be eligible for movie voucher?

Does Renewal and annual fees differ? I mean, for this card after 1 year do I have tonpay 1000 each as annual fee and renewal fee? Is this is true, is it true for all other cards that have a fee?

From what i have seen, joining fees and annual fees are always same. The difference arises when we get welcome benefits for joining. Like for this card it is 1000 worth of 4 BMS tickets.

Annual fees don’t have these benefits (usually). SCB Ultimate has 5000 as fees and it gives 5k worth of vouchers with renewal fees.

Annual fees can also be reversed when you meet spending criteria. Like 1 lakh in a year.

Offtopic: I had a horrible experience with this bank.. In July one day I got a mail and message that my ” Rbl credit card application got rejected…….” Im just shocked and clueless as I didn’t applied any credit card with Rbl..
Even worst thing is that they made an enquiry in CIBIL.As a premium member Got an alert from CIBIL as well.

Somehow I managed to find a Rbl credit card agent and he told me that.. “if someone has your mobile number, email id and pan card they can apply credit card on your behalf without your consent as Rbl doesn’t require any Otp or anything else” ..I asked him then what about the documentation ..he told me first they will check the eligiblity by entering above details..if one get the approval they will call you for documents..

I tried to contact this 3rd grade bank through email..no wonder I didn’t got any response even after 10mails..

Will we be getting 4 tickets every following year. And is there annual fee reversal with some amount of spend. And I’m already using a different rbl card. Will I get any offer switching to this one. Kindly reply.

    Query-
I am using this card since last 1 month. I experienced terrible incident. I am unable to get 4 movie tickets according to welcome offer. I fulfilled all the terms & conditions but still I am unable to redeem welcome benefit. Bms offer page shows that offer is valid only for 60 days after receiving card. But when I contacted rbl customer care they told me that you can redeem welcome Benefit only after 60 days.

    Very strange.

    Can anyone clarify?

RBL is extremely bad in resolution using email. Idiots always call.
Story goes like this, I wanted to cancel RBL popcorn, requested to CS, they took 18mins to basically do it all. Now the team is different for closure, and they called I was unavailable, has to request to CS again. I’m again unavailable to attend. I mail and want written commn only and they still call, when I attend they say someone else will call again. Someone else calls, I’m unavailable. I call CS, they tell me to write to headcardservice, basically L2. Have to call again to register new cancellation request.

Now waiting for L2 to reply or Im going to have to involve nodal officer. Any suggestions?

SBICards is simple, call and they’ll cancel.

Sid, what shall be your advice to close the card of stubborn RBL.
When I call they say that closure team will call back for confirmation.
    No-one calls.
I email for closure of card. They say closure team will call back.
Haven’t received any call since 6th Jan.

In latest email, they said “i’ve agreed to be with them” and in the same email “they said they couldn’t reach me”.

What to do? Their L2 matrix mail doesn’t even reply back.
Now i have been billed annual fee on card. This saga has taken more than 40 days, started on 10th Dec.

Please write an article on how to proceed with such issues.

Currently I’m thinking to just pay the fee and continue with closure. Idiots gotta close in next one year.

We cannot find a number matching with these last 4 Card digits in our database. Please give it a try again in the next week.
