HDFC Bank Regalia Credit Card Review

By | November 7, 2015

HDFC Regalia Credit Card is one of the Super premium credit cards issued by the bank which holds a prestigious status. It’s usually given to high net-worth individuals who have higher ITR or a better relationship value with the bank. Its loaded with whole lot of features with great reward points on every spend. The accrued reward points can be redeemed for mobile recharge or hotel/flight bookings and more.

HDFC Regalia Credit Card – Indulge in Luxury

Typically, if you’re a frequent shopper, Regalia card can accumulate huge reward points and you can enjoy a foreign vacation with your family for FREE once in a while. One of my friend actually does it in real life. He puts all his business expenses on this card, anywhere around 2L-3L a month and uses all the points accumulated over a span of an year to book flight tickets to Malaysia for his family. That literally saves huge money πŸ™‚

HDFC Regalia Credit Card Reward Points:

Their reward pointing system, redemption and usage are quite complex, but i’m here to make it easier for you to understand πŸ™‚ Unlike moneyback card which limits higher reward points for online purchases alone, with Regalia credit card, you get 4 reward points for every Rs.150 spend. You can also get an accelerated of 2X reward points on dining, selected air bookings and for purchases done on regalia website. That is 8 Reward points for every Rs.150 Spend. So now you should be wondering how much you can save with it. Here’s a simple calculation on how much you will save if you spend Rs.1 Lakh on the card.

  • Normal reward points (4 RP for Rs.150) = 2664 Points * 0.75 Rs/point = 1998 INR (~2% savings)
  • Accelerated reward points (8 RP for Rs.150) = 2X of above = 1998*2 = 3996 INR (~4% savings)

Hope that makes you clear about the fact that you can save upto 4% in monetary value with HDFC regalia credit card.

Redeem Regalia Reward Points:

To utilize the reward points, you first need to convert them into Regalia vouchers and then use in in their dedicated Regalia website. The disadvantage of this is that you can only purchase things from that website using the vouchers, you can’t take a cashback credit into your account as like Moneyback card. But good thing is Regalia website has lots of things which will help you in your day to day needs like Mobile/DTH recharges, Hotel/Flight/movie Bookings.

Alternatively, you can also convert Reward Points into AirMiles of leading domestic and international airlines @ 1.3RP = 1 Airmile (Jet Airways/Air india/Krisflyer) or 665 RP = Rs.500 indigo voucher.

Lounge Access:

Priority Pass: You get 12 free access with Priority Pass issued with Regalia. You can also apply for another priority pass for add on card holder. The Primary card holder and the add on member can jointly have 12 free access to the Priority Pass lounges every year. You need to swipe your Priority pass card to get access to the lounge.

MasterCard/Visa: You can get 2 complimentary access per quarter with Visa (or) MasterCard affiliated lounges. All you need to do is swipe your card directly for this lounge access.

This is one of the great feature the card has now.

Features of Regalia Credit Card:

  • CardExpert Rating: 4/5
  • Reward rate: ~1.6%Β  normally, upto ~3.2% on accelerated rewards (from Nov 1st 2016)
  • Accelerated Rewards: You can earn 2X Reward points on dining, selected air bookings and for purchases done on regalia website.
  • Complementary Airport lounge access: Yes, Β up to 12 free accesses to the Priority Pass lounges every year. ( some cards have 5 instead of 12)
  • Fuel Surcharge Waiver: Enjoy 0% surcharge (Minimum transaction of INR 400. Maximum cash back of INR 500 per statement cycle)
  • Foreign Exchange Markup fee: 2% + Service Tax (Best Credit Card for Foreign travel)
  • Special Features: PREMIUM Dining, Travel and Lifestyle Privileges
  • Insurance Coverage: Air accident compensation of Rs. 1 Crore, Protection worth up to Rs. 15 lakhs against any medical emergency when you are traveling outside India.
  • Personal Concierge Service: Global Concierge Assistance for all your travel & other needs. Its kind of virtual assistant service over phone.

As you can see above, HDFC Regalia credit card is power packed with huge list of features as compared to any other card issued by any bank in India with such low annual/renewal fees, which also gets waived off on spend basis. Any reward rate above 2% is a great number and you can hardly see such numbers with other banks offerings. It not only gives you great reward points, but also serves as a great status symbol.

So are you gonna apply for it? No, slow down baby. HDFC bank issues this card only to high net worth individuals. Contact your account manager if you think you’re eligible for the same. If you already hold other credit cards with HDFC, you can ask customer care if you’re eligible for the up-gradation. Have something to say? Consider dropping a comment below πŸ™‚

Next to Regalia, Diners Card black & Infinia are the topmost cards. You can go for any one of it.

    Hi Siddharth.
I recently had an issue with my HDFC credit card so customer care offered me the Regalia Card.
I want to know Does regalia card work well with Paypal. Will it work with online internet foreign companies I am working with Paypal as the payment processor. I have read some reviews that regalia card does not work well with paypal.
    Thanks

Name of the card doesn’t and shouldn’t matter for using on Paypal. That being said, HDFC Regalia has to work smoothly. Just make sure international usage is enabled also that international limit covers your transaction amount.

I am Regalia card holder and SO far I can say the HDFC bank is cheat in upgrading the card. I had Platinum plus card and had more than 8k points but when they upgraded my card I left only with 3k points, so it mean they convert the points into category level and make you fool. Additionally If you opt to redeem your points HDFC charge you 75 Rs. only for redeeming the points and never send you, your desired items. HDFC is the most conventional bank in modern technology world. So many technical errors in their database and customer suffers at the end.

      Sanjay,
You usually loose some % of points when you upgrade to higher end card. Catalog redemption is never suggested, and yes, HDFC does have some issues at times, but they have some of the best cards in the industry as well. So we got to compromise on few things πŸ™‚

        Hi SIddharth,

Same case with me. Not yet happened, but I am also being offered HDFC Regalia Card as an upgrade from my existing Superia Card. This, they are offering me by claiming my 60% reward points and only will carry forward 40% of my points to Regalia.

What do you suggest.. should i go for the upgrade? Secondly, i got bit worried on the following two points of Regalia:

        1) Your review above states that they can be only redeemed against items on the Regalia website. This is a limitation, I wouldn’t be comfortable with that. Rather they should also offer vouchers of online shopping websites like Amazon / Flipkart on Regalia website for redemption. This way I can buy such vouchers and then ultimately buy anything from a huge choice of lakhs of products from online shopping sites.

        2) Another thing came across my eyes while reading the Terms and Conditions of Regalia cards on the HDFC Bank website was that their points are valid only till 1 year after accumulation then it would get expired! I have a huge point balance in my existing HDFC Superia Card only due to years of good usage and the fact that they are valid till the card is active. (In other words, No expiry date of points). If Regalia doesn’t offer this basic facility, it is not worth it i think.

Kindly review the above two points also while suggesting. Thank you in advance for your help.

And on a separate note, I also have an idea in my mind that I can redeem my entire points balance in my Superia Card which is close 20k, and there after making the points nil or negligible, I can accept their offer of upgrading to Regalia (and start fresh accumulation of points in Regalia Card only). This is even possible as the HDFC Bank CC Executive who called me for upgrade and I asked him this option.

So what’s your say on this aspect as well?

        Reply
        1. Siddharth Post author

My best advice: Upgrade to Moneyback card and redeem for cash credit. 20k points(as you said on other thread) will give good cash value and also you’ll loose less(or no) points in this. That’s the best way to use your hard earned points. Once you redeem them, later you can choose to upgrade to regalia after 3 months or so.

I have currently 16k reward points in my Platinum plus credit card, which will be soon auto upgraded to All Miles card (as the previous one expires in March’16).. What’s the best way to utilize my hard earned 16ks reward points from Platinum plus card..??

          2. Siddharth Post author

Get it upgraded and then use it on recharges & such. Else you can also redeem and then upgrade (if point value is high)

          1. Bhavesh

            Hi Rakesh,
What’s the best redemption way?? In the form of vouchers OR to get something from the catalogue ??

    2. NIHIT

My card upgraded too but they didnt told me about point reduction. i made several followups via mail & escalated the matter in social site as well.
they credited my previous reward points in upgraded Regalia. yes in terms of reward points there is no comparison with this card to anyone.

HDFC does not charge Rs. 75 for redeeming points in case you own a Regalia Credit Card. Hence, point redemption is free in this case.

HDFC charges Rs.75/- + service tax of Rs.11/- odd for point redeem of all cards. But if you have HDFC VISA Moneyback then you can adjust that (10k points = Rs.4k) with your billed amount.

Recently i upgraded from Moneyback to Regalia and lost good amount (11k point = Rs.4.4k) and only carry forward 37% of points. I upgraded earlier also, but points remain as it is. But this value is also nearly equal to same amount if i pick movie/flight/recharge options.

Not that bad deal after all. Sometimes i feel i should have done moneyback first and then upgrade. But past is past, can’t help.

Most local stores if they use HDFC, Citibank or Yesbank Machines accept Diners cards. Besides with the usage of mobile wallets like Paytm, Mobikwik, Payumoney, it has become very easy to pay with Diners cards even if the website doesn’t accept the card directly. The only website which I feel is a big bummer for any Diners card holder is the Amazon.in, which neither allows any Diners cards nor any wallets. On contrary, Amazon.com accepts Diners Club Cards easily. I find the acceptability really high these days. But as always you SHOULD have a backup VISA or MasterCard Card. My two cents..

    Hi Siddharth,

I have an HDFC Superia card. So far, accumulated around 21K reward points. Now, they have given me the option of upgrading my card to either Regalia or Jetprivilege HDFC world international card.

    1. What do you suggest which card should I go for? By the way, I am not a frequent flyer.
    2. Should I exhaust my reward points and then upgrade? And what would be the best way to redeem the points so as to get the maximum value?
    3. Regalia is a Visa card whereas Jetprivilege one is a Mastercard. Should this impact my decision?

What’s your take on this? Thanks in advance, man.

      1. I would suggest Regalia (i also use it)
      2. Check where you get max point value and do it accordingly. Upgrading to regalia wont make much difference, however you might loose some % of points during upgrade.
This is because point value on superia is lesser than regalia.
      3. Go for Visa, it has some movie offers as its a “Visa Signature” card.

You can also use your Allmiles Card for additional lounge access (2/quarter) apart from Priority pass card. You need to swipe your card directly. This comes under Visa Signature program benefits πŸ™‚

      Reply
      1. Abhishek Roy

VISA Signature Cards come no where close to the lounge offerings from Mastercard. As of now Mastercard has the biggest partnerships with most of the lounges in India. Visa’s current lounge tie up is not good. With Mastercard, you’re covered up even in tier 2 cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Cochin, Goa etc. So if you want a credit card with lounge benefits as a priority, close your eyes and go for the MasterCard variant.

        Reply
        1. Siddharth Post author

Very True. MasterCard’s USP is lounge access. Having 2 MasterCard credit/debit cards is more than enough to get domestic lounge access for a seasonal traveler.

The Terms and Conditions Copy that I got in print with the credit card a few days back says that Regalia/Business Regalia is exempted from the redemption charges of Rs 75, but the terms and condition document on the website says that Rs 75 is applicable for all the cards. That means have they started charging Rs 75 for the Regalia customers too? Please highlight. Besides, I also wanted to know that have they charged you the portfolio management fee of Rs 100/quarter for preferred banking? Please tell.

    Hi,

I am planning to upgrade to Regalia card, have following doubts:

    1) They have mentioned 12 priority pass free visits per year on bank site, but only 5 is mentioned on the third party site through which i applied for the card. Did HDFC recently increase this from 5 to 12?

    2) For other cards, they have mentioned Priority pass and Domestic lounge access (via Visa/Mastercard) separately. But for Regalia, on HDFC site, there is no mention of the Domestic lounge program.

So, if i visit a lounge in Delhi/Mumbai, will they reduce it from my free Priority pass visits? In that case, it would be of no use.

    3) When was the Club Vistara Silver membership tieup done by HDFC? Since this is also not mentioned in the card offer on the third party website.

Seems they actually reduced the free visits from 12 to 5 on priority pass recently. Also, you can get Mastercard Lounge access @ 2 visits/quarter which they don’t mention.
So use Priority pass Card for International lounge access, and Mastercard for domestic. No idea about when the partnership for vistara came in. Should be in recent times as Vistara itself is pretty new.

    Hi Siddharth,
I have HDFC Regalia as well as AMEX Gold Charge Card. AMEX provides alot more reward points than Regalia. But as you have mentioned Regalia is also a very good card. I wanted to understand which one I should use more often OR do I need to use specific card for specific transaction.

I want to maximize the rewards by using these two cards but not able to understand the best way to use them. Any suggestion would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Amex Gold card is good to use upto certain limit (I have mentioned in detail in separate review). While regalia stands good for unlimited usage.

HDFC Regalia Credit Card Conceirge services is one of the worst in the industry. They are actually cheating customers. I recently booked a flight ticket using regalia website 6 month in advance. Money was debited and E-ticket sent to me.
Just 1 day before travelling, while doing web-check in, I came to know my surprise that ticket is cancelled. No communication sent to me by HDFC regalia customer care or the Air line. On asking why it cancelled, HDFC is making all sort of excuses, such as flight cancelled, flight route changed and finally , Air Lines informed me.

My advise, do go by lure of such credit card. Go for any other card, but not HDFC

HDFC website says, on ALL MILES card we get Complimentary Priority Pass Membership and VISA/MasterCard Lounge program.

Are these two different ? Do we get both or One of these. ?
What is MasterCard Lounge program ?

Both are different and you can avail both of these. Almost all Mastercard debit/credit cards issued in India gives you 2 complimentary access/quarter which will be applicable for you if you have MC variant. Similar with Visa too. But Visa domestic lounge network is very small.

arent you getting rewards rate wrong.
    4 points per 150 Rs.
But 2380 RP for 1000 Rs voucher.
so for every 100 rs spent -> Points per 100 spent * value in INR of 1 reward point
    (100*4/150) * (1000/2380) = 2.66 * 0.42 = 1.12

This is only slightly more than a debit card. money back still wins.
Infinia’s rewards rate is 1.76. So much better than regalia.

    Reply
    1. Siddharth Post author

Which voucher are you talking about? Yes, it gives less reward rate on catalog redemption.
      But,
      1RP on Regalia = Rs.0.75
      1RP on Infinia = Rs.1
This is for redeeming on site for recharge, etc.

Airlines or regalia site? And in case of customer support who is responsible ?
In other words where should I seek clarification / support / flight info / refund etc ?
    Thanks.

      Pradip,
Most Online Travel agency, including regalia books tickets with respective airlines by passing your info to them.
as soon as you book tickets, you’ll get email not only from regalia, but also from airlines.
So check with Regalia team first for cancellations, etc. They should guide you.
Or, if its reg. Airline info, u should support respective airline.

      Hey Mohan,
For Indigo, redeeming voucher doesn’t make much sense as you’ll be limited to voucher terms & conditions. You can still do by sending the redemption form via courier. Yes, painful process. But Just go ahead and book your Indigo ticket on Regalia Website itself using points. Simple and easy.

    Hi Siddharth,

Thanks for the review here and the good website.

Recently I applied for HDFC Regalia, was offered as life time free card and along with that also received Diner Club Premium Card. At same time also got ICICI Jet Airways Sapphiro Card during same time.

Regalia points system are 4 points / Rs 150 but issue is that their promised valuation (of 1 point = Re 0.75) is only on Regalia website. If you go to rewards redemption the value is quite low. If I compare with regards to JP Miles, for Regalia one gets 205 JP Miles for every Rs 10000 spends. Regalia has one clear benefit.. the only Card which offers Priority Pass with 12 complimentary lounge access / year. $27 * 12 (~ Rs 19500) benefit compared to any other card.

ICICI Jet Sapphiro Credit points are 5 JP Miles per Rs 100 which translates to 500 JPMiles for every Rs 10000 spends. And so in that sense comes better than Regalia – this should be obvious as it’s Jet co-branded card. But this card doesn’t offer any (not even single lounge access complimentary through Priority Pass). And not to ignore this is a chargeable card.

So now confused which card should I use for spends? Any tips, points.

So it is bit confusing which one to use for spends.

    1. Siddharth Post author

      Gagan,
It depends on how good you’re in using the miles.
      1. If you can find ways to use your JP miles for Award tickets with value 1 JP mile > Rs.1 (probably a first class ticket to somewhere out of India)
then using ICICI Jet Sapphiro Credit card as this gives you >5% in monetary value.
      else,
      2. Use regalia site and get the Revenue ticket for shorter flights using points.

    Hi Siddharth,

Regalia offers 4x rewards points only when you shop from regalia website, dinning on selected restaurants (very less in the list, mostly 5 starts), booking from air vistara.com. They are not giving 4x rewards points for normal shopping, departmental store shopping, utility bills, online shopping, grocery, and other payments. Most of the time you end spending the major chunk of your money for these purposes. So I see it is quite difficult to reach upto a level of expenditure from Regalia access points, so that one can really enjoy the 4x reward scheme.

On the contrary the cards like RBL platinum maxima and SBI signature are indeed providing 5x i.e. 10 rewards points on grocery, departmental purchases, online shopping, dinning, and even for utility bills. These cards also offer 10000 and more bonus RPs on crossing 2 lacs expenditure. Additionally, they provide worth 500 Rs per month movie ticket free which is a great payback value for the CC holder. I hold all these three cards and no doubt Regalia may be a status symbol, but one needs to have really lavish lifestyle to actually redeem the benefits of this card. In my honest opinion, SBI signature, RBL platinum maxima, or Amex cards ( which has 30% flat discount on popular dining restaurants /clubs/bars) are more lucrative than Regalia.

    Please share your thoughts.

    Thanks..

    1. Siddharth Post author

      Prashant,

There is something called “point value”.
RBL Maxima card can give you 10 Points, which is only 2% value (10*.20ps/point)

There maybe also cards which can give you more value for Dep. store, etc. (with certain cap like SC cards)
How i see is, you can’t save a lot doing these.

As i spend a lot on business txn, i can easily get 2% value back on virtually everything with no upper cap.
Anywhere dining/airvistara gives you 4% back and its rare to find such card!

I’m not in metros, so restaurant offer is not something i’m concerned about whereas you can choose card accordingly.

Whatsoever, don’t just look at points, look at point value as well πŸ™‚

Nope, even the wife (add on card) gets 12 visits free per year (checked with customer care by calling twice). Also, since the priority pass works as 1+1 (one accompanying guest is allowed free) – it works to total of 48 maximum free entries in a year (12 for primary holder priority pass, 12 for add on priority pass, multiply each by 2 for accompanying guest).

When I asked the same question to the bank they asked me which one I want in regalia . That means , they are ready to give either regalia visa or regalia master card. Am confused and please help to choose the right one. Expecting reply

    Hi Siddharth,

I have a few questions on Regalia.
    1. Is there a way, while applying for a CC, we can opt of either of Visa or MasterCard? If given an option, which one is better generally?
    2. Can my son (6 yrs) accompany me free into the lounge if I hold a regalia? If not, what are the options (except paying $27) as he, obviously, won’t be issued a credit card.
    3. Is it possible for upgrade from Regalia to Infinia (life time free)? I hold a regalia already.
    4. In simple terms, what are the benefits of having a Taj Epicure membership?
    5. One of the financial benefits this card lists ” Enjoy 0% surcharge on all your fuel purchases (Minimum transaction of INR 400. Maximum cash back of INR 500 per statement cycle)”. Could you clarify what’s this cashback of INR500 it talks about? Is it just the surcharge waiver limited to INR500 or an additional cashback over and above 0% surcharge

    1. Siddharth Post author

      1. Yes, MC is better, mainly for its bigger lounge network.
      2. No, try to have some other card with lounge access. Some lounges allow kids though.
      3. Pl contact RM. Lots factors included.
      4. Early/late check-in/check-out is something worth enjoying.
      5. its just 0% surcharge. no additional Cashback.

I have HDFC Diners card as well as HDFC Regalia. Both offer pretty similar benefits. My main purpose is to accumulate points to eventually buy flight tickets or upgrade to Business class. Also free lounge access.
Can you figure out which card of the two is better in that purpose or a mix of two?

    Hi Siddharth,

I find the Regalia redemption process quite confusing. So far I was redeeming points earned on my Regalia card only through the Catalogue. After reading information shared by you, I tried to explore redemption through the Regalia website. I have the following queries:
    1. I generated a voucher code for my leftover points (I didnt have many because I used most of my points for Nike vouchers off the catalogue before discovering this website). Got a voucher code of Rs. 865 in exchange of 1135 points. But I’m not sure how to use this Voucher code which is a 11-digit number. The various options on the Regalia website (flights/movies/recharge) do not provide any space to punch in this code. Instead they ask for the card type.
    2. Apparently mobile recharges are only applicable for pre-paid numbers. Am very sure most people using a Regalia card would be using a post-paid connection! Is there any way of using my voucher code of Rs. 865 for recharging for a post paid connection?

    Thanks in advance,
    Vishal

Most of my expenses will be shopping, fuel, movies, etc.
    What’s your say ?
    – Regalia suits me better ?
    – Or should I wait for the new card ? When is it expected ?
    – Or any other card from other bank will suit my expenses ?

Recently, I have upgraded my card to Regalia from MoneyBack card. I have some points to get clarified:
    1) It’s a premature question for me to ask but is there a system to know how many Priority pass lounge accesses are remained on the card to be used? I tried to connect with customer care of both HDFC and PP but no luck.
    2) As of now, there are 5X reward points if the transactions are done through Payzapp. So, if the money is added to Payzapp wallet, then would that be considered as a transaction to gain 5X reward points?

I currently have 3424 points in my card account using which if I generate a voucher on today’s date, the value stands at Rs. 2568 (1 point=Rs 0.75). Say if I generate now and use it against some bookings after 1st November 2016, will the value remain at Rs. 2568 or it would get devalued just like the redemption ratio and be equivalent to Rs.2054 (1 point=Rs.0.6).

Secondly, after generating the voucher how long will the voucher be valid?

Thirdly, can I make a booking using rewards points AND voucher simultaneously?

I am asking you these coz the regalia customer care seems useless and you have so far been a great help to me.

Siddharth it would be extremely useful for a larger audience if you can use your expertise to provide an analysis/advice in form of a SPREADSHEET SHEET or otherwise depicting a situation wherein :
1.Say an individual has 15/20/25 lpa ANNUAL income .
2.His expenditure say 10/15 lap ANNUALLY.
    3.Type of expenditure TRAVEL,SHOPPING,DINNING,LOUNGE ACCESS.

The analysis would provide/return the TOP 3 cards covering maximum needs.

OR else you can provide a list of TOP 5 cards/combination of cards covering broad needs as per SPENDING Levels.

No, Add-on cards are almost same cards just with different name on it.
You can use Primary Credit card + Primary PP Card + Add on PP cards in that case.

Siddharth, I got the credit card today along with the Add – on cards but only a single PP card for Primary Holder. It is mentioned in the letter that priority pass is only for primary holder. Can you please confirm at your end? What shall I do if that is not the case?

          Nitin,

You’ve to call Customer Support for the Add-on Priority pass Card.

    Dear Siddharth
For Domestic longer access can we use Regalia master card / Visa card only ?
Is it valid for free longue access ?
So we can use priority pass only for international longue access, as it is limited upto 12 only.

i want to know that i have money back visa platinum card of hdfc and i offered by hdfc bank that there is an offer for you. you can upgrade your card to regalia that has minimum limit is 2 lakh and now my visa platinum card limit is 40000. so it is possible that my limit can be increased because when i called to customer care they told me there is only upgrade offer. you can upgrade your card into regalia but your limit cannot be increased and the excutive who took my documents he told me that your limit will increased upto 2 lakh.

      Arjun,
It depends on your usage history, dealing with bank and lot factors. Yes, they can do so if your income supports.
