HDFC Diners Club 10X Rewards Further Extended through March 2018

By | April 4, 2018

If you’re in India and not using the HDFC Diners Club Cards then you should. It’s because it’s a sin not to use their 10X program for accruing reward points. It was in 2011-2012 that HDFC Bank partnered with Diners Club International  (The company that came up with world’s first credit card) to bring their cards to India. Diners Club was the one to introduce the first charge card to the world, wanna know more? check out Difference between Credit Card and Charge Card

HDFC Diners Club 10X Rewards Uber

Initially there were hiccups as the acceptability was less and merchants were reluctant to allow those cards on their websites and PoS machines due to the relatively higher fees than their counterpart (VISA and MasterCard). But then HDFC shifted the whole game to the new level with their 10X programs which can help you earn up to 33.33% cash back as reward points. This year they have extended their generous 10X again. But there have been some interesting changes.

HDFC Diners Club 10X Rewards Program Changes as on May 2017

  1. The program has now been extended till 31st March, 2018, 31st October 2017, July 31st 2017 (extended)
  2. The reward earning capability has been drastically reduced by half on all cards, for Diners Premium (Max 5,000 RP/month) and Diners Black (Max 25,000 RP/ month)
  3. To be eligible for the offer, cardholder has to do minimum 5 transactions in a statement cycle.
  4. New partners List: Smartbuy, Bigbasket, Uber, Redbus, Luxehues, Swiggy, Lifestyle and Bookmyshow. Removed: Flipkart, Myntra, Goibibo, Makemytrip, Amazon
  5. Free One on One Movie ticket limits introduced: 4 for Black and 2 each for Premium and Rewardz per month.
  6. SmartBuy offer is applicable only on Flight and Hotel bookings. Also cardholder has to continue as a guest to avail the offer
  7. 10X Reward Points is not applicable on EMI transactions.

HDFC Diners Club 10X New Partners through Oct 2017

Interesting info: Amazon has been named as one of the partners. If that is true then it’ll be huge as it was the only major e-commerce website which was not there in the 10X partner brands. Yes, now Amazon ACCEPTS Diners cards and the payment goes through smoothly.

Why shall it be a setback?

Earlier the reward accrual capability was relatively generous

What does this mean?

This means you can spend maximum ₹18,750 on the Diners Premium on the 10X category above which you won’t get any 10X points. And you can now just spend a maximum of ₹75,000 on the Diners Black on the 10X category above which you won’t get any 10X points. However, you’ll still continue to get the points as per the base rate of the respective cards. This is a drastic change. I know people who used the purchase big on this HDFC Diners Cards to earn massive discounts. But this earning power will be very limited now.

Besides, if they remove partners like Flipkart, Goibibo, Makemytrip and Myntra, it’s going be difficult to earn rewards points as traveling is one area where we spend huge and thus it makes it easier for us to accrue reward points quickly. However, Smartbuy will still compensate that to some extent.

Having said that, I still believe HDFC Diners Club Cards are still one of the best cards you can have in India as of now.

Future of Diners 10X Rewards? As predicted earlier at Cardexpert, 10X program is likely to be extended even further with shuffled partners. This will keep happening until Diners Club Acceptance in India increases as good as Visa/MC and then you can expect the 10x program to be discontinued or heavily devalued. This might be happening sometime by 2018, enjoy until then 🙂

  • Update: 2nd May 2017: Its funny that they’ve updated the dates to July 31st 2017 from October 30th 2017. But its just to test our curiosity 😉 Most deals are usually signed with merchants for 6 months. Maybe they might add new terms after July, lets see.
  • Update: 6th July 2017: Good news for Diners Club Users. You can now gain 10X points on a lot of other transactions on SmartBuy like Flights, Hotels, Buy, Recharge, Shopping via Flipkart and Bill Payments. So, yes, this can gain you a lot of points.
  • Update: 31st Oct 2017: Amazon knocked Out. 10X promo extended through March 2018
  • Update 4th April 2018: Please refer the latest update on this article here: HDFC Diners Club 10X Program (March 2018 Update)

    Two more things.

Smartbuy points will be reflected in 90 days, like Lifestyle. Also Smartbuy is not only for hotels or flights, it is for recharge and utility too, no?

I guess all good things have to come to an end. the old style 10X was one of them.

In Amazon “Your Account > Add a Credit or Debit Card” page, the “Credit/Debit card type:” shows only Visa, Mastercard and American Express. How do add/you pay via Diners card?

Movie ticket value is also halved now from Rs 500 to Rs 250

“Discount amount on a movie ticket will be equal to ticket value or Rs. 250/-, whichever is lower, per movie ticket.”

This was ticket value or Rs 500/-, whichever was lower till last week!!!

I had booked 4 tickets and got Rs 1000 off just last week!

Now the Terms and Conditions say the following:

    10. If eligible, for booking of two movie tickets in one instance, discount value will be
applicable for one movie ticket (or Rs 250, whichever is lower). For booking of
three tickets in one instance, discount value will be applicable for one movie
ticket (or Rs 250/-, whichever is lower). For booking of four tickets in one
instance, discount value will be applicable for two movie tickets (or Rs 500/-,
    whichever is lower).

The more we use any offer, the more likely its going to have new rules & limits 🙂

Forthe last few weeks, I was not able to get a single discount on any tickets. I don’t know why. When I apply the movie one on one offer, the price gets halved but when I was taken to the Protect Buy page, I was shown the full price.

Yes. Since they haven’t mentioned that they won’t be crediting 10X for loading wallet hence I’ll assume it will work out that way. Besides, think logically, there is no way to get back the money that you spent on loading the wallet. It is already with amazon. So either way they’ll be getting that money. Besides, you cannot use that money in any other way apart from buying things from amazon. So the purpose is solved. Besides, you cannot loads thousands and thousands of money in the wallet. At a time, in a month the max capacity is only ₹20 K. So that puts a check on misuse too.

13/05/2017 AMAZON SELLER SERVICES MUMBAI IN – Direct Product Order
13/05/2017 AMAZON SELLER SERVICES MUMBAI IN – Added money on Amazon Pay

If you see in both the cases the merchant description is same. Also in the SMS you receive, the merchant name will be same in both the cases. Till amazon differentiate between the both the transactions and helps the bank, I think we should get 10X points. 🙂

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

No man, there is no difference, that’s why I said earlier only that they should allow for all transaction on amazon, however I’ll still wait before checking myself.

Abhishek, thanks for all your insights.
Regarding loading wallet, they already have a condition in their website
            3. Only direct payments made using HDFC Bank Diners Club retail cards will be eligible. Any wallet payments will not be eligible even if wallet is refilled through HDFC Bank Diners Club Credit Card.
            What does this mean?

          4. Abhishek Roy Post author

That works for Uber and Bigbasket.

          5. Mahesh

Well then, wait for 2-3 months, you’ll know it yourself from 1st hand experience. Because this rule and these partners like amazon.in have been added for the first time. So no one has first hand experience yet.

          2. Nitin

FYI. I did a top up for Amazon pay but didn’t receive the 9X points. You can see how many incremental points you are going to get in the next statement on hdfc netbanking -> Cards -> Enquire -> Account information -> “Reward Points Balance – Current”

The incremental 9X points show up 2-3 days after statement generation and are credited to “Reward Points Balance – Current”.

For now, I have asked Amazon to refund the money back to credit card.

          3. Abhishek Roy Post author

Until you allow that money to be there, you’ll never know if you’ll get the other 9X points or not. FYI, once you recharge the wallet, you’ll only get 1X points within 3 days when that transaction is posted as an unbilled debit. But once the statement is generated, after 2 days you’ll get the rest 9X points. Since you have already reversed the transaction, you’ll not know how much you earned.

        2. Abhishek Roy Post author

10X points are only for amazon.in, not for amazon.com.

        1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Yes you can. The moment you get the ransaction claimed by the merchant and it comes in unbilled debits from authorization, you’ll see that 1X points have been credited. However, in order to look for the 9X points you have to call them up and ask for a break up of all earned points after a month or so. I used to do it but don’t do it now and the process is pretty automated and doesn’t require any follow up. So don’t worry, your points will get credited for sure.

You cannot “log in or sign in” every time show them that you are a new user and you don’t want to sign up. When they ask for phone number and email ID, just give them what you always use. It is pretty much similar to Bookmyshow where you always have the option of not logging in but you can complete the transaction as a guest by giving mobile and email. But in Bookmyshow you can earn 10X points both by logging in or continuing as guest. However, in SmartBuy you NEED to continue as guest only. No log in or sign in

In all likelihood this list of vendors is not final. That’s why the frequent flip flop in dates. If you remember last year, they had month on month extension and it was only in August that in one go they extended the validity till March 31. I have a feeling that some OTAs could be back by August. But it is unlikely that the cap would be restored to 50K. The offer was too good.

The moral of the story is make use of all such unbelievable offers till they last. You never know when they are pared down.

Second point, some of the hotels on the partner websites are indeed pricier (altho very small differential for flights) but what if these stays are at corporate expenses- some corporates do have corporate cards/travel desks, but many dont. I think most PSUs/ govt deptts dont. For employees in such entities, such overpricing is of no consequence, in fact higher the better, you get the points, your org picks up the tab. I suspect such offers are essentially directed at catching spends from such employees.

There is a mention on the Diners website that the reward points will expire for Diners Black after 3 years but nothing for the other 2 categories. Am i missing something or is there any section where the 2 year validity is mentioned?

      Hi Jai,
The only Card in HDFC apart from Infinia (I am not sure about Infinia though) that has a validity of 3 years for RP is Diners Black. Rest all cards have 2 years validity on points. You can check it when you see their standard terms and conditions for the cards. It says the points validity is 2 years. Only in case if Black, they mention specifically that it’s 3 years. For all the rest of the cards it’s understood that they have 2 years validity. I had th privilege of holding all the three variants of Diners Cards. That’s why I’m saying so.

Thanks Sherin. You can book tickets now. For the last whole month, I too wasn’t able to buy a single ticket on discount from their portal. It was because they were changing their site for the new rules. You’ll now get 2 discounted tickets on your card. Max value of discounted ticket can be ₹250

For normal (non-10X or 2X) transactions, you still get 5 points on every Rs. 150, right? Even if that is to fill up a wallet?

And do you know what transactions qualify for 2X? I’ve never fully understood where 2X would apply.

    Thanks!

Can we earn hotel loyalty points when redeeming the HDFC diners club points?

For example – book a spg hotel via redeeming points on the hdfc portal / concierge and earn starpoints after the stay.

    Hi Abhishek,

On the Smartbuy page it has offers related to Flipkart, Makemytrip, Goibibo, eBay etc. Even when you click those then it takes you to a Smartbuy type page which is cobranded with the above. Does that mean that the transaction qualifies as a Smartbuy transaction which hence earns 10X points on Diners Black?

    Hi Siddharth,

I was going through the Rewards Catalogue of HDFC for 2017 – http://mailer.hdfcbank.com/campaign/Asset/hdfcbank_credit-card-rewards-catalogue.pdf?_ga=2.28883838.317268014.1496146907-1181764421.1477304061.

The Diners Black card can’t really be considered as being 1 Reward Point = 1 Rupee based on what I see in the catalogue. Everything that you want to redeem appears to suggest that 1 Reward Point = Rs. 0.50. For instance, a Dominos Pizza voucher worth Rs. 500 needs 1000 points. And you can see that in other options as well.

So then what do you redeem for if you want 1 Reward Point = 1 Rupee? And if that can never happen then how can we say that the 10X offer really offers 33% off? Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

The points are not to be redeemed from catalogue. It should strictly only be redeemed against flights/hotel bookings and bill payments for mobile postpaid etc. It should NEVER be redeemed for items from catalogue. Period.

When you make a booking/recharge you have to redeem points to generate a voucher for xx value. Then you apply this voucher to reduce the total payable amount by xx.

So you have the option to make part payment by points.

Has anyone had any success with a hotel booking on HDFC Smartbuy, which is a 10x partner, using the Diners Black? I’ve tried twice and got failures both times. I think the problem (or part of it) is that Smartbuy for some reason displays a lower price for the same hotel than Cleartrip (which powers Smartbuy), so the confirmation doesn’t go through, since inventory is not actually available at that price point in the system. I might be wrong.

I just tried again, and checked both Cleartrip and Smartbuy side by side. Cleartrip says it has no rooms available at that hotel, while Smartbuy is showing availability (and a very good price). Naturally, the booking won’t go through, since the query ultimately goes to Cleartrip’s booking engine.

I just noticed on HDFC Diners website, that from 1 July no points will accrue in loading balance in wallets. i.e. not even 1x.

Does that apply to Amazon Pay too??? Or only wallets like Paytm, MobiKwik, FreeCharge etc.

    Effective 1st July’2017,
    a. EasyEMI and e-wallet loading transactions will not accrue Reward points.
    b. Reward points accrued will be reversed if a retail transaction is converted into SmartEMI.
    c. Reward points accrued for Insurance transactions will have a maximum cap of 2,000 per transaction.

    Check under Rewards & Redemption

    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

This is difficult to say as they haven’t mentioned what will constitute “e-wallet”. Beisdes, if you pay a merchant using say PayTm, I don’t know how on earth will they distinguish between a loading of e wallet and a genuine transaction where PayTm is just a payment facilitator. If this happens then it will be an end of game for wallets for me as I’ll stop using them if not a necessity. However for Amazon pay I’m quite scepticle as HDFC always sees the same merchant name in a direct transaction on amazon.in or while loading the wallet. My gut feeling says, we will continue to get points in Amazon pay balance loaodng

Few things that majorly dent this scheme are –
    1. The reward point devaluation of almost 33% w.e.f. 15th Aug
    2. Reward Point Redemption on movies/recharges/dth will be discontinued from 15th Aug
    3. Over the last 2-3 months, people who opted SmartBuy 10X scheme for marginal gains over MMT/goibibo etc are a disappointed lot because the reward point will be credited after 90 days… by which time they would have undergone a steep reduction in value.

It is always advisable to opt for immediate gains/cashbacks instead of accumulating points.

I wanted to redeem these ponits for Eurotrip (Flights) in 2018 but as per the new update from HDFC the points will be values at .30 paise/point instead of .60paise/point, effective from August 15, 2017. And i got this information just 2 days back. I either want to redeem them as cash or redeem them with a travel voucher which i can use in future. I had a call wid CC and they say that the voucher will be valid for 3 months.
Can you suggest me the best way to redeem them.

One way is you can redeem these points now for Jet Miles. That way you’ll have the miles with you and can use it at a later stage. The second is you have to decide the time frame for the Euro trip and narrow down on the probable date. Get the voucher generated and just book the Flights now only. As of now, you’ll have 54000 points = ₹40,500 worth points. Don’t let it go waste. Just generate the voucher. You’ll not be at a loss. Also as far as my knowledge goes, the voucher validity is for 1 month and you will have to pay ₹75 plus tax as redemption fee.

    Hi,

There is an offer going on Smartbuy which gives 10x points on all purchases. Terms say
    1. “Diners Club Card customers cannot club the 10X benefit with any of the existing programs with the Diners”.
    2. “Reward points will be posted to the eligible Cardholders within 3months, For Shopping through Smartbuy ”
    3. “Maximum Reward points that could be earned is 25000 per month on your credit card or Maximum of Rs.250 cashback on your Debit Card”

I this 25k limit on top of the Diners limit of 25k in a month? I have Diners black. So after 3 months when I get this Smartbuy 25k points (lets assume maximum usage), will I get that on top of 25000 that I already get from Diners (Say I spent 75000 in Amazon on Diners in 2nd month for which points will come in 3rd month)

    Hi,

I want to book an international ticket costing 62000 using Diners Black. This is my first time using the 10x feature.

If I book from smartbuy, do I need to register my card and create an account for the 10x points to be credited?? Can I buy as guest? I have never purchased on smartbuy so asking.

The terms say this – ‘Link your cards to PayZapp -> Pay with PayZapp at HDFC Bank SmartBuy to get 10X Reward points or 5% cashback.’ (Does this mean that you have to first link to PayZapp and then pay using the Payzapp feather for 10x) Also says ‘Reward points or cashback not applicable on load/send PayZapp transactions’

IE: how to use smartbuy so RP is properly credited??

I need to purchase stuff worth 30000 on Amazon also in the next couple of days, will I get RP for that transaction or will the threshold for 25000 RP be HIT due to the earlier 62000 Smartbuy ticket transaction?

If I do these two major transactions one of Smartbuy for 62k and one on Amazon for 30k say today and tomorrow, how many RP’s will I get in my next to next statement.

    My Calculations

Smartbuy – 62000 / 150 = 413 * 50 = 20650 RP (Are smartbuy transactions over and above the 25k monthly cap on Diners Black or are they also part of it)

    Amazon 30000 / 150 = 200*50 = 10000 RP

Will the total RP’s be 30650 or just 25000??

I will probably end up spending about 15/20k on UBER this month as well so will I be getting 10x RP for that as well or will it be capped at 25000 for Smartbuy Ticket 62k + Amazon 30k + Uber 15k

Considering only these three sets of transactions for this month, what are the RP’s I am looking at?

Last query, If I book the tickets via smartbuy today and the Amazon 30k shopping tomorrow and my statement is generated on 15th of Sep 17, I believe the points will be credited in the 15th Oct 17 statement for both these transactions. Correct?

It has never been informed by HDFC that reward points will not accrue on Paytm Transactions (of course, it will not accrue on e-wallet loading transactions), and they unilaterally reversed Reward points on my Paytm transactions. On taking up, Customer Service Officer, HDFC Bank has informed that with effect from July 01, 2017 there is a revision in reward points program.

    Revised Reward points program:
EasyEMI, e-wallet loading (PayTM, Mobikwik & PayZapp) and transactions (PayTM & Mobikwik ) will not accrue Reward points.

Whereas information provided on HDFC Diners Club official website states as under :
    Effective 1st July’2017,
    a. EasyEMI and e-wallet loading transactions will not accrue Reward points.
    b. Reward points accrued will be reversed if a retail transaction is converted into SmartEMI.
    c. Reward points accrued for Insurance transactions will have a maximum cap of 2,000 per transaction.

As such, there is no information regarding non-accruing of reward points on transactions (PayTM & Mobikwik ) . The information with regard to reward points program revision as above has never been communicated to me through E-mail or SMS (as claimed by Customer Service Officer).

Sir, Whether action of HDFC Bank is justified?

Little can be done on this front. I too was denied the break up. Since I had been tracking the points, I didn’t find any goof up, so I don’t chase them for points on all transactions. I know this isn’t a solution but you have to rely on their automated process of crediting points.

I usually kept track of the total spends that I did on my credit card which were above ₹150. For each spends I used to add them up and used to see the number of points that got added for that month. For the 9X points that you get you have to track on the very next day of statement generation. That way you can keep track of the remaining 9X points that are credited each month for the previous month.

    Hi guys,

Can someone tell me how the calculation for RP’s is done.

this was my assumption for a purchase worth 62k.

    62000 / 150 = 413 * 50 = 20650 RP

is this correct as in how do you guys tally your points based on purchases since they dont give any breakups

Q: Are all EMI transactions not considered for point accrual. Does the transaction on partner sites have to be paid at one go?

I have an insurance payment that is deducted on EMI basis which is a continuation from my earlier HDFC card before being upgraded to black, will this payment provide me with points pertaining to the black setup or the earlier card?

    Reply
    1. Ramesh Kumar

For Rs.62,000 spending, you’ll be getting 18,600 reward points(remaining 9X, because already 1X credited after few days of transaction) based on 9X getting credited for my card on next day of bill generation, I think formula is round((totalSpending/3)*0.9).

You can tally by checking the difference between the reward points at end of bill generation and the reward points on next day of bill generation.

I haven’t tried EMI transaction recently, but as per HDFC new TnCs, yes no reward points for EMI transactions.

      1. Ash999

Its difficult to figure out how many points will be accrued, I dont know if its calculated per transaction or as a total of all spends at 10x partners and then a lump sum is taken.

If it is done per transaction then we lose a lot of points since I am assuming only multiples of 150 are considered? So, like what if you have Uber spends of say <150 those are completely discounted, versus say if the sum total of all uber spends is seen then you dont lose many points.

Does someone know the formula or how the round it out at the end, I do seem to lose a good chunk of points like 4k odd in the last statement

        Reply
        1. Abhishek Roy Post author

The points are credited per transaction. So any transactions that are below 150 don’t accrue any points.

          Reply
          1. Ash999

would you mind sharing the calculation formula, how are points calculated say you have 5 transactions

            Amazon – 33200 – 33200*.33 = 10956
(1095 (rounding off to multiple off 5) credited after x’tion and 9860 in next stmt)
            Amazon – 12500 – 12500*.33 = 4125
(410 (rounding off to multiple of 5) credited after x’tion and 3715 in next stmt)

Also say you made a transaction of the 30th Sep with your statement date being 5th of every month. Will the incremental points come up on the next 5th (i.e 5th Oct) statement itself or 5th Nov ???

Just asking this so I can track my points better

Another query are the points on your earlier HDFC card transferred on a 1 to 1 basis to the new black or do they just vanish. I my case I wasnt transferred any earlier points, that shouldnt be correct right???

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

Yes, the calculation is correct. 1X in the same month when the transaction is posted to the card. 9X next month. Yes, if you transact on 30th Sep and your statement is on 5th October then 9X points are posted exactly 2 days post the NEXT statement generation date ie 7th October.
Points transfer, depends on which card are you upgrading from. In most cases say if from Diners Premium to Diners Black then 40% points transferred, rest gone.

  91. Ash999

btw i just noticed UBER isnt accepting diners black.

    Can you do this:

75k worth of shopping on Amazon&Uber for 25k points (limit)
75k worth of shopping on Flipkart using smartbuy connect for 25k points (limit)
30k worth of international spends – shopping etc for 10k points (limit)

If you do all this in one statement month, will you get 60k points or will the Flipkart bit be ignored coz I’m a little confused with smartbuy earlier it was said its only for flights and hotels, now it says you do get the points but are the smartbuy point limit of 25 in addition to the 10x partners limit of 25

      It’s 83333 not 75000 on Amz & FK and 33333 not 30000 on international. 25k & 10k pts are bonus pts cap.

      1. Abhishek Roy Post author

          Abhishek, “ND” is correct.

          Reply
          1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Ok. Then that means we actually end up earning more than 25K due to the regular points that we earn. Now that’s good news.

          2. Ramesh Kumar

Yes, ND is correct. I made 1.25L+ spending on amazon.in and received 24,998 reward points(not sure on why 2 points reduced) under 10X category.

          3. Ash999

so tell me this if you spend 83k on amazon 83k on Flipkart (smartbuy) would you get 2400 + 2400 basic points in the upcoming stmt and 25000+25000 in the next stmt???

But then isn’t there a 25k cap on earning regardless per statement???

Or am I getting this totally wrong?

If you have spent 1.6l as above in xactions in sep, you will get 1x pts that is 4800 in oct stmt (this is fine since this is less than 25k) and the remaining 9x (ie: 50k pts) in the next stmt in nov ??? Or will you just get 25k in nov ??

          4. Abhishek Roy Post author

If you spend on say 10X partner merchant’s like Amazon etc for 1.6L, you’ll get only 25K in November. But if you say spend 80K on Amazon and say 80K on smartbuy, you can get 25K + 25K points in days to come. In November 25K from Amazon and within 90 days another 25K from Smartbuy. Though usually if you buy directly from Smartbuy for flights and hotels you get credited for the 9X points in the next cycle itself. So in November in all pprbabilities you’ll get 50 K points.

You cannot. You just don’t have the means to say so. But if you are confident that there is a mismatch then you can escalate to the higher authorities.

          Reply
          1. Ankur Mittal

I have escalated the issue 2 times and received bonus of around 35000 points in total.

            1) If you cancel the order and then order again HDFC counts the cancel order amount in your limit. Like I purchased a phone worth 60,000 and then cancelled it and ordered another one. My 60,000 limit out of 75,000 on diners black card is gone. So I escalated it and got the points.

            2) I upgraded from Diners black to infinia. As we get points in the next month it was obvious they won’t be giving the points when upgrading. I escalated it and got the points credited in infinia.

It’s better to keep track of all your transactions.

          2. Ash999

So you mean to say that if you book and order cancel it, your points are removed from your 25k earning limit??? thats weird, I can find a discrepancy of about 4500 points in two of my bills. I did have a few order and reversals on Amazon? Will have to to check properly

So again to calculate my points, I take all the spends done on 10x partners (150 and above) and multiply that by .33 and then round it down to the nearest multiple of 5 that is the figure I should be targeting is that correct. (Obv I’ll only be considering spends above 150 in a single trans)

Is that a fair way of counting your expected points or is there another formula

Since someone above mentioned, you can actually spend 83k not 75k to get the full compliment of points, because apparently these points are in addition to the 5 points per 150 you get?

So assuming a 83k spend on Amazon you get like 2766 points in the first cycle (basic quota) and 25k in the next or is it 2500 in the first cycle and 22500 in the next???

whats the right way, in order to escalate?

As of now, there is only 6 lounge visit (Domestic or outside India) per annual year. You will get lounge access on your Add on card also however the cumulated limit that is shared between the two cards is 6. Total lounge visits cannot exceed 6. Both cards combined. Not 6 visits on each card. I’ll suggest you stick to Diners and apply for another credit card as a back up card with some other bank. Thanx, Sir (Mr. Roy)
I wish to add that balance RPs (9X) on SMARTBUY transactions (Compare & Fly) dated 10.12.2017 have been credited (Unbilled) in my Diners Premium account on 13.12.2017 (after generation of Statement). However, 9X RPs have not been credited for UBER transactions dated 18.11.2017.

As such, we are unable to make out on which transactions, we will get 9X RPs in the immediate next statement & on which transactions, it will be credited within / after 90 days.
        Regards

9X rewards points for all normal partner merchants like Uber, BMS, Swiggy, redBus etc only for November month will be credited after 3 billing cycles. Even I am facing this situation and this is the case because they have brought in all the changes in the month of november. Regarding spends done in december or afterwards, all 9X points from regular partner merchants too will be credited within next billing cycle. This exception is only for month of november.

Abhishek. This has been mentioned in their terms and condition now. November points will take upto 90 days.

How do you typically escalate? Over the phone or through e-mail? And can we ask them to provide us a break-up of all 10X points received in the last 3 months further broken-up by type of 10X? Or is that too much to ask of HDFC?

You have refer to the bank website for that.

I had an observation. Flight fares shown on hdfcdiners site ( booking via points) are so expensive than market rate.
Yes Card points that way are as per market rate..

Is that what others also observe?

That is usually not the case. The price that you sometime see on sites like Goibibo/Yatra/MMT are not true as you’ll only see the final price when you go to check kout where they add convenience fees too. Sites like Diners Club DO NOT take anything extra. What you see is what you pay. I have found the price to be very competitive and often lesser than the final price of market offers too.

In my case its almost 2.5 times. a ticket worth 2000/- showing as more than 5000/- on diners..( Mum-Goa sector) Hence I am surprised. Is it bumped up for Diners Black customers or what…..

I have redeemed points many times and somtimes found the fare to be less but never more and i am talking about both international and domestic.

I did a quick check, puting in DCB & DCP cards. Same flight shows cheaper in DCP 3594 vs DCB 5391.
Isn’t this loot.. I have to shell out more money ( == points) when I am DCB card holder?

    Others have such experience?

I compared once with MMT and flight fares are 1200 more than what showed in MMT for specific flight alone , other flights in the same route had similar price in both the portal

They may be showing different class of fares. Not all OTAs have access to all tickets at the same time. Also, sometimes MMT fare chart is outdated and it says fare not available on payment step.

A good way to check if they are booking same fare class with different prices is to first see what fare class has what price. Which can be checked here — http://matrix.itasoftware.com

10X on international transactions is per statement cycle or per calendar month. TnC says calendar month but when i called customer care they told me it was statement cycle and when i check current points in netbanking i can’t see it reflects last statement international transaction 9X points so looks like it is calendar month as my transactions were spread across 2 statement cycles but in same calendar month ( Dec 2017)

      1. Mukul

Yes but was it changed recently or it was always calendar month when this was launched?

Abhishek, for Smartbuy too they write “month” on the deal page but I called and confirmed that for Smartbuy they mean billing cycle. Do you think it may be the same case for international transactions as well?

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

What I am telling is from my own personal experience. The way I have been getting points for the last 2-3 months. Smartbuy points are credited per billing cycle. International txns points are credited per calendar month.

Thanks for great work and ultra prompt responses Abhishek. I’m sure it’s a great way to ensure more traffic too and rightly so.
Was wondering if you/Sid/ Amex guy 🙂 can help answering this query…
‘Does buying hotel points in dollars qualify for
    1. Getting RPs?
    2. 10X RPs for DCB?’

Retail Intl. transactions says DCB… So curious and hopeful…
Ps: Sid has introduced you, benefitting us from your diligent, thorough and prompt reportage. Would be nice if he can give this opportunity to more (Amex guy comes to mind for his wealth of intricate knowledge on these matters… Of course if he is interested and has the time 🙂
Ps:1 My sis this morning, probably came here for the first time, and said ‘the blog owners’ profile is akin to yours’… I told her ‘CardExpert.in is one of the first sites I open my eyes to every morning’ 😀

    Keep them coming!

Pro tip for HDFC Smartbuy users:

If you are using the HDFC Smartbuy to book your flight tickets, always use Cleartrip instead of Yatra. When you cancel your ticket, Cleartrip charges Rs. 25 and Yatra charges Rs. 400 as service. This is a huge difference especially if you have purchased small value tickets.

The only reason to choose Yatra would be when you want to fly on AirAsia. For some reason, AirAsia tickets on Cleartrip are Rs.250 costlier than Yatra.

Hope this info helps many of you.

I am new to DCB, and need a pro tip from this great forum.

    1. While booking a flight ticket via smartbuy, is it safe to use promo code(e.g. flyhdfc or any other code) to avail 10x points?
    2. While shopping from Flipkart, if some offer is going on(say 10% . flat off instantly using HDFC card) then will I be eligible for 10x points? Also, if there is some seller specific offer or discount, does it bar me from 10x points for transacting to buy that product?
    3. If I load my wallet(e.g. Amazon, Paytm or any other wallet for that matter), I will not be eligible for 10x points. But Would I at least get 1x points?

Looking forward to hearing your experience for above mentioned use cases.

    Thanks!
