HDFC Smartbuy Sale: Get upto 15X rewards on Credit Cards

By | May 19, 2021

As you might know, HDFC bank has been doing the 3 day sale on HDFC smartbuy platform quite often. But this one is one of a kind that not only comes with higher return on spend, but also with higher max cap. Here’s everything you need to know:

Offer Details

There are too many offers in it, so you may just go through it one by one. But the best ones are on Amazon and flipkart and they look like this:

  1. Amazon Offer: 10X rewards upto Rs.50,000 spend (usual monthly max cap); 15X rewards beyond (additional max cap)
  2. Flipkart Offer: 6X rewards upto Rs.50,000 spend (usual monthly max cap); 9X rewards beyond (additional max cap)

Overall Max Cap

  • Infinia: 15,000 (usual monthly max cap) + 15,000 (additional max cap) = 30,000 Reward Points
  • Diners Black: 7,500 (usual monthly max cap) + 10,000 (additional max cap) = 17,500 Reward Points

Note that the additional max cap applies only on txn higher than Rs.50,000. The offer link has clear explanation with examples of various use cases.

If you’ve not transacted any so far, its a easy math, but if you’ve already done some txn with other smartbuy merchants, it may get quite complicated.

Bottomline

Its indeed a wonderful offer from HDFC Bank on super premium credit cards by boosting the 10X rewards program, temporarily. Offers on other HDFC credit and debit cards are also good, but not as lucrative as this.

So ideally speaking you can take home your super fast M1 Macbook Pro or iPhone 12 at ~Rs.30,000 less on Infinia or ~Rs.17,500 less on Diners black. It cant get any better!

Kind of feel cheated by holding a Regalia card since 2014 with 11.5L limit. I don’t know when will they consider me for an auto upgrade.

      Hi Raj,

Just download the upgrade form fill it and send it to chennai office. No need to attach income proof. If you Have more than 10L Limit they upgrade you as soon as they get your form. I just got upgraded ysday. Got my card dispatched.

Send the form and update us with your infinia card…..

Hi. How did you get upgraded? When dis you apply? Pls. can you elaborate? My RM informed that all CC issuances was on hold due to RBI instructions. This applied to upgrades as well. I applied for upgrade almost 20 days ago! Limit 11L on regalia.

          @ RM
My regalia CLE enhanced 11+L on 10th Dec. I called customer care to inquire about Infinia Upgrade. Customer Care executive told me i have no preapproved invite for Infinia, but suggested me to send a form to chennai. I told her my income criteria is very far away from Infinia eligibility. She told Infinia can be upgraded without any income details if you have 10+ limit in your regalia and asked me to download the upgrade form, fill and send it alone to chennai.
I just couriered the filled form alone to chennai office on 19th Dec. On 21st i could see inactive card column in netbanking. 22nd got a msg that inifina card dispatched and 23rd received my infinia card.

@ Ashish My Regalia was LTF, the upgraded Infinia is First Year Free, 10k Annual Fee,Waived on spent of 8L

@Raj, i sent for Infinia only, RBI imposed ban on new issuance only , hence credit card team is very aggressive in serving existing cards. It’s the high time for us to get upgraded if have 10+L CL in exisiting CC.

And voila.. in 2day time.. I got upgrade in my NetBanking.. not sure it was application only.. or otherwise..
So, I take this as opportunity to thank @Sid, @Shivi, you and other members of this portal. New year got me Infinia.. quite elated..

Hi Karthik…..just download this smart buy app, when you open smartbuy webpage at bottom you will see mobile icon, click and install…..then you will get to know about smartbuy offers….also spend based offers I am not getting, but now I login to NetBanking and see offer section which shows spend based offers…like for this month it was showing if I spend 77000 then I will get 5000…however I have not received email or sms. There is no standard and no one in customer service knows too. So we need to check on our own.

Hi Raj , By this time you might have got several times upgrade option in net banking , which lasts only for few days and will disappear. In my opinion more than 5 Lakh limit and 6 months old card, you are eligible for DCB ( 99% ).
So give google search ‘ HDFC FROMS ‘ … Go to > PERSONAL > CREDIT CARDS > There download the card upgrade form-personal , fill it and courier directly to their chennai address directly. No attachments required.

Hi Raj. Me too. I have been holding the Regalia card from 2014 with a 11+ lac limit but I’m not sure if there will ever be an upgrade. The devaluation of the Regalia is pretty bad and now with the 10x and 15x offers reserved for Infinia and DB, I’m slowly loosing interest in Regalia. Iam just waiting for the launch of a right card from a competitor. I will jump in a jiffy.

      Reply
  2. Kashyap

Actually on DB, any spend between 25-50k will esrn only normal rewards as 7500 cap is reached at 25,000 only

Another problem is redemption, with 70% cap

  3. Akshat

    An important point:
“The overall max cap …will be applied on the cumulative spends done on both Amazon & Flipkart at Per individual Card level.”

Hence, the 70,000 odd spend on DCB and 80,000 odd on Infinia for maxing the offer points need not be done in a single transaction and the cumulative will be be counted across these 3 days which can be further broken down across amazon and flipkart.

But of course spend needs to be calculated as pointed out by Sid in case of spends on flipkart or in case vouchers are purchased earlier in the December month.

    Reply
  4. Akshat

BTW a rough calculation ascertains a 25% value back in case of DCB for max cap of 17500.

will be lower in case any smartbuy purchase done already like instant vouchers or amazon spends.

A very good offer but only to a handful of customers!

I tried getting Infinia – applied 3 times in 18 months. Rejected all the three times with different & weird reasons. Reasons they gave –
    1. You can have only on HDFC card (I currently hold Regalia)
    2. I asked fir upgrade instead of new – they said you will get it only if you have HDFC savings account
    3. Opened savings account & applied – they said you will get Infinia only if it’s salary account!!

With the restrictions on new customers, probably it’s time to say goodbye to HDFC & look for other cards!

    1. Prashant Gupta

Salary account is not mandatory. Just go for prefered account with minimum quarterly balance of Rs2L. If eligible u will get DCB or Infinia LTF.

Be patient, you will get it….it takes time to get it…..keep applying from all channels i.e. NetBanking, and sending application form to Chennai office….one day you will see upgrade offer in NetBanking. Even I got after long wait. Regalia is also not bad, Same offers etc but they have reduced point value to 50 paisa but still not bad.

There is so much confusion regarding how this will work when you opt for EMI option. The CC team is divided on whether, in the case on Amazon EMI transaction, only 4x points will be posted or 9x after each month EMI posted to the card. One CCE told me that that they have sought clarification from the backend team. Others may share whatever information they have here.

Are these offers on Amazon/Flipkart valid on EMI transactions as well or only on full payment ones. Went through the terms and conditions, but didn’t get complete clarity.

Sid – can you confirm that 17500 cap on DCB is for the incremental bonus rewards.

One has no limit on regular 1x earning regardless of the spend. E.g. if the spend is 1.5L in Dec, one would earn regular 5000 points and then new incremental bonus capped at 17500. Right?

T&C clearly states it’s different, but it doesn’t let me buy.. I have another smartbuy account but can’t use that with the same Credit card as gyftr then blocks that card..

    Great offer.

Be careful though not to spend just for the sake of it. You save 100% on the money you don’t spend 🙂

There are much much better options available than the overpriced iphones, especially in India. Unless you are a person who just likes to show off, go for other options.

If you are a casual user just go for a pixel and save the rest instead of wasting it. Power users can go for other options. Dont go for the Exynos Chip in Samsung, go for Snapdragon variant if available or go with other manufacturers.

Haha so True. Hdfc is sort of following american way of trapping people by giving high limits then luring people to spend and then some getting trapped by not able to pay then they say we will convert to EMI I and bank makes money out of it. My luck was from very long I wanted to upgrade dslr, phone watch and luckily that moment I got upgrade to my card. And once upon a time 10x was there only for flights and hotel and addition of instant voucher is a great thing.
Other than that buying for the sake of 10x is not a good idea.

The only annoying part – these Diwali and New Year offers got rolled out in the last 10 days of the month when quite a few of us had already spent/bought vouchers to the tune of 22k and hit the max 10x rewards for the month

    Reply
  18. ajay

    1. Its BEST offer if you had plans to purchase something to the tune of 80k.

    2. Its a TRAP otherwise. For DCB – 22.5k will give you 7.5k points. 27.5k spend till 50k will not give anything. 20k from 70k will give you another 10k. So, after the usual 22.5k, its 10k points for a 47.5k spend for a 21% approx reward rate. Now the reason this is a trap is, you can usually get 33% reward rate by buying vouchers and spend as your wish. So, it allures you to spend extra by giving a lower reward rate unless you had plans then point 1 holds.

    3. For Infinia, its a Great offer but only marginally better. You get 30k points on 80k spend for a 37.5% reward rate. You would usually get 33% reward rate if you spread out 50k and 30k spend over two cycles. So, it lures you to forward your spend.

    4. People who are just spending to earn those marginal rewards are the big losers here. It is only making you spend more. Of course if you had plans then 1 holds.

I hold both DCB and Infinia. Having earned around 15 lac points!!! over the past 4 years I am done now. I have spent around 1 crore gross on credit cards over the past 4 year.

You are a bit late with those calculations, Ajay. Infinia/DCB no longer gives you 33~% reward rates on amazon and you can’t buy amazon vouchers for over 5k per month.
People who would be spending now are the ones who would have kept themselves updated with the changing tnc of the offers.

      Reply
      1. ajay

I know, have been playing for long. You are also right in your assessment. I only meant you can still get most of the products electronics, apparel, travel, etc through other vendors like croma, lifestyle, etc and still get 33% off. There is no limit there. So, ppl pulling forward their spend are not better in one way or other. Of course people who were using for other uses can’t do much now. But for them also this 15x offer didn’t provide anything.

*Croma prices could be 10% higher but marginal difference.

Worst part is for November month bank said that not even it is registered has smart buy purchase and are not ready to give explanation after 1 hour long call why only 5500 points is credited instead of 7400 for DCB.

HDFC has started showing upfront discount and net effective price on insta vouchers. What is that calculation? Seems off. For eg for a 250 rs voucher on DCB it shows the below:

    Upfront Discount : INR 250
    Regular Reward Points : 5
    Bonus Reward Points : 45
    Value of Reward Points: 50
    Net Effective Price : 200

What is this calculation? Shouldn’t the no. of reward points be 0.33*250 = 82 (rounded down) ?

IT NEVER WORK THIS WAY. for 250 rs you get only 5 reward points as it is always in multiple of 150 and 9X point is 45 so in total you will save 5+45=50 rs. For 150-299 it is 50 rs saving. For 300 it will be 100 rs.

Their calculation is correct. Your understanding of RP is wrong. HDFC RP is not on pro rata basis like that of SC Ultimate. Start again

Rewards points are calculated on the transaction amount, Every Rs. 150 earns you 5 Reward Points, and 9x is accelerated on the base reward point rate.

For Rs. 250, you earn 5 RP, and 45 Bonus RP.
For Rs. 300, you earn 10 RP, and 90 Bonus RP.
For Rs. 400, you earn 10 RP, and 90 Bonus RP and so on.

      Hope now you understand.

Can somebody please let me know if my calculation of reward value is correct ?

      (Amount to be spent / 150) lower roundoff x 5 x multiplier (1x, 5x, 10x) points.
Actual real world value = 1/2 of that for actual reward value, assuming Amazon gift voucher redemption.

      Eg: 5000 Instant Voucher purchase = 5000 / 150 x 5 x 10 = 1650 reward points. 1x is credited immediately so 1485 would be credited later. 1650 / 2 = 825. So you’d be saving 825 rupees for every 5000 spent on Amazon. (Ignoring the redemption fees). So, 16.5% savings.

be careful – HDFC is not giving any reward points if you buy 5000 voucher, but giving on less denominations only

After reading the T&C several times, I am still confused regarding my particular issue:

I have exhausted my monthly 7500 points on DCB (on travel booking, not on Amazon). Will purchasing from Amazon (below 50K) provide me an additional 7500 points to get? T&C says only if you have exhausted your monthly 7500 limit by using 5X/3X on Amazon/Flipkart, you wont get additional points to work with.

I stopped purchasing during 10x and 15x sale because my purchase was denied last November that I never even used smart buy. It came as regular purchase. Inspite of having screenshot it is difficult to convince hdfc and I left it because it was a small amount of 3k or something compared to people complaining on 70k worth purchase . Anyways it’s always not like that but risk is high if you purchase products worth 50k or more and generally takes 90 days for additional bonus points to credit.

I have noticed when paying with HDFC cards using Smartbuy, never enter Bank OTP at Amazon Page instead enter on HDFC OTP Page after confirming the merchant name should show as “SMARTBUY” and nothing else, or close the tab/cancel that order and again place the order going through the complete process starting with Smartbuy Page by entering Mobile Number + Card 4 digit and so forth.

        2. Lav Kanodia

The bonus reward points had a capping of 7500/15000RP for first 50k and 10000/15000RP above 50k for DCB/Infinia. You may check with the HDFC CC Team after recomputing that. Also, the spends were to be made during the 3 days of the offer. Pretty much jumping through the hoops. In case of discrepancies, usually it is due to some misunderstanding of the terms on our part. I too made a mistake but later on realised that they had credited the points correctly. The capping was 7500RP (bonus) and bonus points (9x) received earlier in the month towards GYFTR InstaVouchers purchased were deducted to arrive at the correct figures.

For smaller amount Amazon doesn’t route the site to hdfc otp authentication but only at Amazon and I have noticed that if your purchase is less than 1000 sometimes I did not even get any authentication

        Hi
There is always a link to redirect to bank page to complete the OTP authentication just below the OTP box.

Clicking on it will redirect you to HDFC Bank OTP page.

Though I have never tried >5000 amount using Smartbuy, so not sure about that.

Got only 3350 points on an Amazon purchase of 20249. Whereas, ideally I should have received 6700 points. Will raise a complaint soon.

Kartikay , do check if you’ve already received the balance of 3,350RP in an earlier month (most probably January 2021). They gave the first 5x (regular RP) in Jan 2021 and only the balance of accelerated RPs have been credited now on the 12th of April, 2021, (balance 5x or 10x) subject to RP caps as applicable.

Thanks for the reply Lav. I had missed the 5x credited in January.

Lets assume the amount as Rs. 20249/- in Dec 2020.

      On 1st Jan you got 1x + 4x (Accelerated) = Totaling 5x points

      Base Points Calculation Variable: 20249/150 = 134

      1st Jan 2021 Points:
      1x => 134*5 = 670 RP
      4x => 134*20 = 2680 RP
      Total => 3350 RP

Now, In April 2021, the bonus points posting is as below:
Since you received 4x accelerated points in Jan2021 and to make it total to 9x, 5x points are pending. (1x + 9x = 10x)

      Pending April 2021 Points:
      5x=> 134*25 = 3350
      Total (Jan+April) => 3350 + 3350 = 6700 RP

So total you received 6700 RP which is 10x of 20249.

Hope this makes you clear, how they have calculated the bonus points.

    Flipkart : 30k
GV on smartbuy portal : 25k

Can someone please help me with it

You will get 15000 RP only.

I am considering that you have DCB or Infinia as you asked about 10x.

Upper limit for a month is 15k RP only, extra reward points during the smartbuy offer were for spends north of 50k on amazon &/ Flipkart. Examples are provided on smartbuy page.

In january 2021 i paid a part with flipkart gift card balance and rest through card. I got the accelerated reward points for the amount paid by card.

Your situation is little different as it is having 2 slabs of RPs.

    Hi Siddharth,

I have bought few items from amazon during 15X extra savings sale for ~80K. However during transaction, i cancelled my first order and placed the same order on the same day during sale. My statement reflected two debits and next day one got credited. Weirdly i didn’t receive the full reward points this month. My statement shows 15K reward credited and 11K reversed. Called customer care, they have taken complaint, however the executive told that for my first cancelled transaction they have given rewards which exceeded the 15K limit and for the second transaction, no additional reward due to limit. In total I received only ~4K points for August month for the ~80K transaction. Hope HDFC understands the issue and resolve it.

Sharing this to understand, whether you or any or the community members faced similar issue. Thanks.

Never ever do that. Its practically very difficult to get points from hdfc. For me worst part was just by clicking on resend OTP it did not record that I have come through smart buy so neither even refresh page when you enter into Amazon from smartbuy. Since my value was 3k I did not escalate and waste further time on it but I still lost 1k points. Hope this helps others too who are purchasing 10x or 15x. I would say delete cookies, history etc and do a neat transaction without cancelling or asking to resend otp or refreshing.

Are you sure that it’s 15X for Aug? Don’t think so. Even for July, till now only the 4X is credited. Rest 5X+5X are yet to be credited for me. Your statement doesn’t make any sense. If 15X was credited, the bonus points would be ~29K (not 15K). Also, for bonus 4x only, to get 15K points, you need to spend 112500 (not 80K).
FYI, the bonus points works on cumulative spends, doesn’t matter how many cancellations were there. In the past, I cancelled one order worth 40K and reordered and still got the bonus points upto monthly limit. There were hundreds of such instances (cancelled order) but those never reduced my full monthly cap.
For both July & Aug, I spent ~82K each on Amazon during ESD and received bonus 4X (~11K each) for both. 100% sure, I’ll receive the rest 19K points each on Oct & Nov End.

Yes, there was a sale around August 07, 2021. Even i am not sure how this works. But for my last extra savings buy on Feb for 70K, i got points in two installments. one on march statement for around 12k and another on June statement for 16K after 90 days.

I believe, it might be system error and HDFC will resolve it. Thanks.

Thanks Pranab for explaining how it works. I think, in my case, the AI system have miscalculated. Two 80K transactions debits, so 4X of 160K gives you more than 15 K reward limit. When the order got cancelled, refund got credited in two different amounts (78 K and 3 K) because of multiple items from amazon with different order number. so they reversed 11K for the cancelled order. I hope, HDFC will rectify this error, if their backend human team calculates this.

How did you arrive at 112500 for extra 15k points on Amazon.. that might be true for Flipkart but for the extra 15k points on Amazon Rs.83,000 is enough.
        33000/150 = 220; 220*5*14 (even if we consider 14x as bonus and 1x as normal points) = 15400 points

        Reply
        1. Pranab

Please read my comment again: for bonus 4x only, to get 15K points, you need to spend 112500.
This is for 365 days offer on Amazon Smartbuy (5x). Not for any any special promotions like ESD.
