RedGiraffe Review: Now Pay your House Rent with a Credit Card

By | May 31, 2020

We all love credit cards. Isn’t it? It’s a short term loan that is easily available and we can get an interest free period for the same which theoretically do help us in earning some interest on our savings. A lot of us don’t own a house and thus live on a rented property. The rent amount varies from ₹5,000 to may be ₹1,00,000 in some cases.

But what if I said you can pay rent through credit card and thus earn points as per the earning rates of your credit cards?!

Pay your House Rent with your Credit Card

RedGiraffe’s RentPay

The company RedGirraffe is one of the pioneers in the field of rental payments. It’s very easy to register on their website under the ‘RentPay‘. You need the rent agreement.

Fill up the form, give the land lords account details. After that you’ll get a SMS on your registered mobile number with the RG ID and the password. That password can be changed.

They take approx 48 hours to approve your property. Once it is done, you can register the RG ID with the partner banks. Most of the big banks I know off have partnership with RedGirraffe. Some famous banks are HDFC, SBI, ICICI, KOTAK, IndusInd, Axisbank and Yes Bank.

The process is fairly transparent and is easily available on RedGirraffe’s website. I have done the same through HDFC Bank through Smartpay.

RedGiraffe transaction charges

  • Rental payment less than Rs.10,000 : Rs.45 (inclusive of all ST)
  • Rental payment greater than Rs.10,000: 0.39%+ST for each transaction.

This is very nominal. And it is nothing if you compare to with you’ll get.

Charging Rent on Credit Cards

How will it benefit by charging your rent on credit cards? Say for example you have cards like Regalia, Diners Black, Infinia, SBI Elite etc.. all these cards let you earn reward points rate more than 0.39%.

Diners Black/Infinia allow 3.33% and Yes First Exclusive allows 2.5% cash back as points. You can also pick one from the list of other best credit cards in India.

So you pay 0.39% but get 3.33% for example.

On top of it, you get savings from the interest that you get due to interest free period.

Helps CIBIL Score

Plus, you can maintain a good CIBIL score too with good payment history. Since rent amounts can be hefty, hence this will help you to build up the transactions in a year beyond which you get extra perks from the credit card companies like upgrades & limit enhancements.

So this way, it becomes very easy to pay the rent not by cash but by credit card and earn profits (as reward points).

Bottomline

  • Cardexpert Rating: 4.5/5 [yasr_overall_rating]

Give it a try. I have been using this for sometime now and I’m very happy. I don’t have to remember to pay my land lord. The payment gets debited automatically from my credit card and credited every month in his bank account. We both are happy.

Do let us know what is your take on this. Did you like the idea of paying rent through credit cards? This is legal and this will help you get reward points easily.

You can pay any amount that is as per your rental agreement. If you don’t have a rental agreement in cases like you’re living in a PG, in those cases a letter of indemnity can be given as per their (RG’s) format and then they’ll approve your listing. Hope that helps.

If i set an autopay 10th of every month in NetBanking,my landlord has to receive rent 10th of every month so when will the amount get deducted from my card(for autopay).I want to know when will they debit coz if they debit before 7th then it’ll come on that month statement so I’ve to pay that month itself.

PayZapp could also be used to pay rent/transfer the money. Unfortunately, few days ago, per day transaction limit has been reduced to INR 5000 from 10000.

This is food topic but, could anyone please explain what is credit limit ?
Assume If, i get hdfc money-back credit card and credit limit is 50,000, What does that mean…
Is it Monthly limit for me to spend 50,000 on that card or yearly limit to spend that much on card.

Also if i cross that limit what will happen??

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Monthly limit. The bank usually don’t allow to go beyond the credit limit. If at all they allow on your request, you’ll be charged overdraft fees for that. Try not to spend more than 30-40% of your credit limit in a month. 🙂

Hey Dibyaroop, Yes you can split the rent and pay via RedGirraffe. Just add the account details when registering for RentPay. They are available on live chat & Whatsapp (not sure what the no. is check the site out) between 10-6 (I think) to answer any related queries you may be having. They’ve been super helpful so far, drop them an email if you want.

No. I have asked RG, who say that there no provision for two different payments. The owner will get one combined cash. **Note: The house is in the name of owner and his wife.** I asked this query as owner and his wife can split the rent so that they can avail a income tax deduction.

Do you know – how will a landlord know if the amount transferred by RG was infact sent by you. Is it necessary to inform the landlord of such transactions. I don’t want my landlord contesting that someone else sent that amount :P. I am sure RG will have addressed this concern.

        Hi Neeraj,

I had the exact thought when I heard about them from my room mate. So we did some research and wrote to them. Found out that while a tenant gets confirmation via bank with attached rental confirmation straight from the bank, landlords account shows rent transfer entry from XYZ (for the rental amount) from RG nodal bank account. Though we ve registered only last week, can drop a note once the transaction moves next month. I don’t see any harm in checking with landlord once they receive the rent.

        Reply
      2. Abhishek Roy Post author

The payment is made in such a way that the notes/transaction will mention your name and month of rent pay. And once, the payment has been credited to the land lord’s account, you will be notified by RG via phone/sms/email. Any one of them. So then you can confirm to the land lord about the transfer if you want.

I have been using SBI prime to pay rent through redgiraffe for more than 1 year now, earned loads of reward points and redeemed them for cash (statement credit) , plus received milestone benefits like pizza hut vouchers every quarter and 7k pantaloons voucher and annual fee waiver. I applied for SBI prime specifically for rent and utility payments.

      Hello Antariksh,

I work with Risk and Compliance at Tech Mahindra. As I understand while transacting via Red Giraffe we indemnify for all such wrong doings. Any wrong found at a later date tantamount to fraud on the part of the incumbent, in this case the tenant. Even otherwise, in your example your relative is receiving amounts as income which is assessable to tax. Now if such person decides to give back cash to you he would simply be parting away with their tax paid income. I know so many IT friends of mine who are using rent via PayTM by swiping their Amex credit card and taking out cash via PayTM’s payment bank back to their own accounts thereby creating a P2P transaction. In this process they are earning huge points as well from Amex. But such situations are short lived as PayTM would come to know some day that they are paying up Rs 2000 as charges for every Rs 100,000 swipe happening via their wallet. Having looked at RentPay from all possible risk and compliance angle, I am quite certain that its by far the best model. Also the banks runs its own checks on each tenant too. I was told by people at RG that some 18-20% customer applications gets rejected by banks or/and by RG post the verification test runs. So I guess I answered your qtn.

Please modify the post to include that there is an additional 1.75% plus taxes charged extra by the bank for SBI.
Looking at the original post, I subscribed to SBI Elite card, but then with this 1.75% plus taxes extra by bank, essentially it becomes, 0.39% for RG + 1.75% for SBI plus taxes, which I think is comparatively more than compared to the Reward Points benefit?

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Well, when you want to subscribe through your bank, it is governed by bank rules. If SBI charges you an extra 1.75% for Utility payments that is because of SBI and not RedGirraffe. I have written a post about RedGirraffe. So I don’t know if there are any further charges by individual bank. I have HDFC, Yesbank and SBI cards. I am least bothered about SBI cards as they take more than what the give. I have used HDFC and Yesbank Cards. They don’t charge a dime.

I did not go through with SBI Elite because of these 1.75% charges. I thought I could meet the 4 lakh spend if Rent was also included. Now trying it via the HDFC Debit Card that offers 1% cachback before I decide what to do in future.

I think what he meant was for sake of complete information, you should mention the SBI thing, even RedGirraffe has mentioned it on their website as a separate line.

Also since you have given an example of card names including SBI Elite, somebody might use their SBI Elite card on the website and not check properly on RedGirraffe website too.

It would be helpful if you can highlight that in the section where you put the charges (0.39%) etc.

My house owner wants by every 6th rent amount and Remarks of house no. in every transaction.

Every quarter i pay maintenance and deduct the same and give reduced rent to house owner. How will Red Giraffe works in that scenario. Will it go by only rental agreement amount or reduced amount also. And will it ask for a bank account of house owner to be mentioned in rental agreement.

You may choose to use some other card. My wife did check with SBI Card. She was told that there is around 2% cash back the bank is offering on RentPay. We ended up using ICICI Card. Now she’s shifted to a new place where she pays Rs 11000 and on my card Rs. 11051 is deducted. I earn 20 points for every Rs 100 (5% value back) and I honestly don’t know what 2% charges you guys are talking about.

Yes. Actually, there are a few billers for which SBI has a biller list in which a few billers are shown as category 2 billers for which an extra service charge will be levied. That is as per that document. So one should always take the confirmation from the CC. I know now that there are not extra charges for LIC. For Rentpay there was never any charges by any bank. 🙂

          3. Vikram Khanna

SBI used to charge 1.99% + tax earlier for RedGirraffe when launched. The charges were removed sometime last year. I remember this charge being there on SBICard when I set up my RentPay account in March 2017.

          4. Abhishek Roy Post author

Yes. And it is because of that charge, that we never recommended SBI Cards for RentPay. Later on first they removed those charges, then they introduced SBI PRIME. That took the utility pay game to the whole new level altogether.

        2. Arjun

      Hi,
I have been checking my Experian/credit score month on month for the last 6 months that I have been using RentPay. There has been a quantifiable improvement. It’s a no brainer that by paying Rs 56000 rent month on month the credit score swells up. I plan to apply for a house loan late next year. My bank tells me that with a credit score of over 740, I could expect 1% cheaper loan. Now for an average of 1 Crore loan, I am looking at Rs 80,000 savings per annum. All because I am regularly using my credit card to pay an otherwise mundane NEFT transfer with no benefits. Add to it all the cash redeemable points that one gains. 18% GST is on 0.39% fees only. So in effect, you are talking about a mere 0.0007% on account of GST. No issues at all. I am a CA and I can tell you it doesn’t get better than this. I for a change have actually started to like HDFC Bank for their innovative move of capturing rentals via credit card through their product RentPay. At least, they have introduced something meaningful other than all those brain dry discount offers of various FMCG products.

When I try that it directs me to HDFC internet login account which I don’t have.

Is there any alternative to sign up with HDFC credit card login ???

I have infinia, DCB and YFE. Between the three which one is better for rent payments?

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

I’ll personally recommend YFE, due to increased options of redemption. However, all depends on which is your preferred card.

      Reply
      1. Ashwin

Can you please tell me what increased options? I’m getting a YFP and am reading here that Amazon/Flipkart vouchers are no more?

        @HTC Fan,
Consider Infinia since you may get spend based annual fee waiver too. Infinia earn rate is 3.3% compared to YFE’s 2.5%.

        Reply
      2. HTC Fan

Thanks, but with amazon taken off arn’t the remeption options limited now?

        Reply
        1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Yes. But it’s still more than HDFC. Problem with HDFC is that you’ll get ₹1/RP for Infinia or Black only when you redeem for Flight tickets. Even for hotels, it’s not worth booking because the rates are far more than what you pay at other OTAs like MMT, Goibibo, etc. Now if you want to buy vouchers for Croma, the conversion ratio drops down to ₹0.50/RP. This brings th effective reward rate to 1.67% for DCB or Infinia. But that is not the case with YFE. You get 2.5% whether you redeem for flights tickets or vouchers. Hence the recommendation.
But at the same time, if a person flies a lot and wants to redeem the points only for flights, then definitely, DBB and Infinia are better options.

          Reply
          1. Ashwin

            Thanks. That makes sense.

Another advantage with DCB is you can convert the points to air miles of Jet, Vistara, BA and Singapore too. But like Abhisek says YFE is better if you look beyond flying based redemptions.

          2. HTC Fan

Thank you all for your inputs. The other advantage is that YFE points dont expire currently. Has anyone tried flight redemption through YFE? Is is cumbersome.

          3. Arjun

This is new info, are the flight fares if booked via DCB points -higher than what we get in MMT or Cleartrip? Is that what you meant?

You are not paying through redgiraffe in terms of the interface. Redgiraffe provides the RG-ID which is linked to the Landlord bank account in their back-end. HDFC transfers the payment to RG through CC standing instructions and they transfer the amount to the landlord.

Is there any additional benefit of going with red giraffe? What does their tie up with banks mean?

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

First of all, they are new. They were not there initially. The second thing is as of now, their processing fees for rent payment is waived off, but as they say it’s a limited time offer, so they will charge processing fees in future. Their processing fees is 2% in comparison to 0.39% charged by Redgirraffe. Redgirraffe allows Autopay through banks which leads to higher points through cards like SBI Prime.

      1. Amex Guy

Where do you read that it is a limited time offer? They claim that one of their USPs is “ZERO” charge. They also mention that autopay route will be available soon.

        1. Abhishek Roy Post author

          This is from their FAQs.
          “Does NoBroker provide any cashback/rewards?
NoBroker waives off the entire processing fees which is 2% of your rental amount. For example, if your rent is ₹35,000 NoBroker provides an instant discount of ₹700. Please note that this is only a limited period offer.” Plus if they allow Autopay through banks like Redgirraffe does, then it will be a great alternative too.

          1. Amex Guy

Wow. That’s a sneaky way to hide intentions.

Although my guess is if they become autopay partners, they’ll be able to negotiate a better MDR with banks as well. Not big reason to switch because RG has been great.

          2. Abhishek Roy Post author

Yes. But they’ll have to rope in more partners and offer something extra. Otherwise why will anyone leave a time tested company and move in to uncharted waters.

a word of caution for using nobroker.in for rent payment. nobroker used paytm platform for processing payments, this is recognised by HDFC Bank cards as e wallet loading and hence no reward points are granted for payments on nobroker.in. This is for HDFC BANK credit cards, i am not sure about other bank’s cards. So if you are using nobroker.in for paying rent by HDFC credit cards, you pay processing charges to nobroker, and do not get any reward points.

I think that should be if you pay via wallet. Uncheck pay via wallet and pay and points should come. There are a lot of websites that use paytm as gateway. U just need to be aware to uncheck usage of the wallet money.

Yes. I can confirm that we get 20RP on Rent Payments. I get it every month. Just for everyone’s info, what SBI means by Autopay of utility bills is that if you have been able to set an AutoPay for anything (rent, electricity, post paid bills, life insurance etc) you will get 20RP if you are able to set auto pay and pay. There are a few billers which are not allowed to be set on auto pay. For those you have to manually make the payment and hence you won’t be getting 20RP. For the auto pay ones, you will get 20 RP. Enjoy.

You would get the reward points at the standard reward date of 1.3% for diners premium whether the payment is done through Standing instruction or manually. Also, if you register this as a new biller, under the current offer you will get 5% cashback(maximum of 100/month) for the first 12 months when registered through SmartPay under Credit cards

Thanks for the confirmation and prompt response Abhishek! I was a bit concerned considering upgraded my simply click to prime just for rent payments. I have 9 credit cards and each card is exclusively used only at certain places for their rewards and had no benefit in the simply click card considering Diners Black and Yes first preferred had better reward percentage. Had taken it only for Flipkart sales since they have offers with SBI. Your post helped me to make my mind for the upgrade. Keep doing the great work!

    Reply
    1. Abhishek Roy Post author

Absolutely. You’re welcome. It wouldn’t have made much of a difference with Diners Black. The SBI Prime comes with a annual fees of ₹3000. If you can offset that by spending more than ₹3Lakh per year then taking Prime is a good decision. However if you can’t cross that threshold, then sticking to Diners Black is equally rewarding and you can go further to spend more than ₹5 Lakh to offset the annual fees of ₹5000 on DCB

      Reply
      1. Harry

Yes, that’s why will shift rental payments to SBI in order to achieve the 3 Lakh limit so as to avoid annual fees and take the benefit of 20RP. I use the Diners Black strictly at 10x partners only and since it was offered LTF, do not need to worry about meeting thresholds. Just moved all my bills ( 10 in total) from HDFC to SBI Prime and let’s see how the experience is. Have not enabled auto bill pay on electricity since prefer using Amex to load Paytm ( INR 1000+ * 4 transactions) in order to get the 1000 points and pay the bill via Paytm then. Difficult to use Amex due to acceptance issues or else. Thanks again!

They have now launched another product called Red giraffe IB Membership and are providing Loss of Job/Income insurance. They have partnered with 24 insurance companies. Apparently, in case of loss of job [dismissal/termination] or resignations due to accident, critical illness or surgery 6 months of Home Rent or Home Loan EMI shall be paid to the member. The charges can be calculated using their charge calculator available on the website. The charges can be paid in 12 monthly installments without attracting any interest and they are providing back GIFT vouchers worth 100% charges or up to a cap of Rs 900/month. Enrolled and received CoI from HDFC Ergo worth cover of Rs 180,000/- and received Big Basket’s CASH vouchers. Worth checking out, if interested. Do check out the policy documents available on their website.

Can some one explain will that work if the rental agreement is on my name? I mean the person with credit card and name on rental agreement name are different, that works? Not all the cases the rental agreement is on person name who holds credit card. Rental agreement name can be wither parents/brother/spouse name. In that case, will someone eligible to register in RG?

    Hi CCFreak,

I believe Payzapp has a 5% cashback with a cap of Rs 200. I usually use that for utility bills.

I’m planning to redgirraffe rent through DCB for 3.3% points.
Pls advice if there is an option for higher points. My rent spends are in the range of 5 lpa

    Thanks!

    Hi Abhishek,
Thanks for letting us know about this. This is teraffic and can help us in managing our finances better. I have few questions in my mind, please help on that:
    a) Why do they ask for PAN details and rent agreement, are they gonna share this with any third party too, like insurance companies, banks, income tax department etc ?

They are transferring money on your behalf. In case they are subjected to audit by any government agency, they can show all the details of transactions and on whose behalf it was done and so forth.

You ll get points on DCB for redgirraffe payments. Even better when you pay through payzapp and use billpay promocode.

    Hi,

SBI had taken off redgirraffe from its list of billers last year. But I can see Redgirraffe in the list of billers under autopay on SBI’s official site. Does this mean we can use sbi prime now to pay rent via redgirraffe and earn RP?

Too many personal details have to be provided and mandatory! I can’t imagine how much ‘business’ they are going to do with these personal details collected.

    Hello Abhishek Roy,
Thanks for this useful post. After going through the comments I realised that citi cashback credit card is mentioned nowhere. It gives 5% cashback on utility bill payments. I am thinking of paying rent via this card by adding it to payzapp. Do you think this will give 5% cashback?
P.S. if anyone here has an idea about it, please share.

just an update, i checked citi app and found redgirraffe under utility billers. Also, TnC doc mentions that to be eligible for 5% backback, we have to use citi bill pay facilty only. So it is clear that paying via payzapp won’t work.
The only limitation is the cashback will be capped at rs 100 per month.

Got a notification from CITIbank on redgirraffe offer. Checked on RG website too. Has anyone received a similar notification?

Rent payment using dcb via PayZapp on RG will fetch RPs or not? Not the wallet load but the direct payment. If yes is it 10x or 3.3%? And does it give an additional Cashback of 5% if we use the promo code ‘ BILLPAY’.

My landlord doesn’t give his PAN number to me. Is it okay if I give a dummy PAN number that matches his name?
Do they have any kind of PAN verification from their end?

Does hdfc give redgiraffe points for payments via payzapp?

I think yes. I do that every month. Though there is no separate breakup for the reward, but I do see approx correct rewards including all the bill paid on Payzapp (including rent) on my Diner Black. However, for my wife’s millennia, HDFC gives only 1% (as wallet load) not as online usage. So if they extend same to other cards, the’ll count all the payzapp spend as wallet load.

    Hey,
I want to pay the rent with my IDFC select Credit card. Should i take the payzapp route? Will it be worth the hassle given i pay 25K rent per month + 115₹ RG charges and get 1700 points on IDFC select card.
I have AMEX MR, Gold and Plat Reserve cards too.
    Please suggest.

Just a small caution on reward categories.. For a long time now, hdfc has been tracking redgirraffe rent payments via payzapp as insurance spends. It has even fetched bonus RPs whenever they ran campaigns on insurance spends in past. But noticed this time that the regular RPs are not showing under regular Feature RPs column in the card statement, instead it’s showing under Rewards Program RPs at the bottom of the statement. There was a 5X program on insurance recently so they added 750 bonus pts and then reversed that bonus as well, leaving me with the regular 1X.
