amex redemption offer: get 30% points back

American Express has come up with yet another decent offer for September 2021 wherein you can redeem your points (for stmt credit only) and get 30% points back, upto 10,000 MR points. This is a targeted offer and here’s everything you need to know about it,

Offer Details

OfferGet 30% points back on redemption
Max. Points10,000 (on redeeming 33,333 points)
Offer TypeTargeted
Effective MR Point value35Ps/point
Equivalent spend/credit8250 INR
Offer period6th Sep – 31st Oct 2021
Fulfilment28 February 2022

Ideally what this offer does is, raise the value of your points for stmt. credit from 25ps to 35ps per point when you intend to redeem for cash credit to stmt, as simple as that. Note that you can use this offer only on below redemption modes:

  1. SafeKey Transactions
  2. Select & Redeem (Pay Card Charges with points)

I got this offer on Amex Reserve and I think its an okaish offer for those who don’t have the gold cards with an ability to redeem for gold collection.

Even for Gold card holders, its a decent offer if you don’t have enough points to redeem for 18k/24k gold collection.

Note that even though the points are clubbed, the offer is eligible only for the txns done on the card for which the offer is eligible.

What’s ugly with the offer is the fulfilment date. Waiting 4 months to enjoy the benefit is not something I would expect from any issuer and Amex being the premium player shouldn’t be doing it.

But I’m still optimistic on this and hope to they fulfil the offer soon, as they do so usually.

Update: Offer fulfilled on 26th Nov 2021

Final Thoughts

Giving points back is definitely one of the creative promo but given that they’re targeted only to a few, I wish they had given a better discount, maybe 40% with above offer construct or maybe allow for any redemption with 20% or so.

Either way, its good to see raining promos from American Express since August 2021 and hope to see more soon.

Have you received this offer and on which card? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

Not worth it. Even on MRCC if you do a statement credit of 24000 points it gives you 9000 INR i.e. 0.375 INR per point.

Not sure why would someone go for this offer.

It’s decent for those who don’t have Gold cards and stuck with plats, like me.

It brings me to a question i have been pondering on for quite sometime. why would someone take amex platinum reserve card in the first place?

I know there are a few benefits listed on amex site but are they really worth it in practicality? You’ll have most of them anyways from other cards like infinia etc.

Ideally for Taj benefit. I was about to swap for MRCC but got stuck with the ban.

Hi Deepak – I have the Plat Reserve card. I think the offers there are pretty good – not as good as the 72000 Plat charge card but a bit above Gold Charge card. For example, the latest being 25% cashback on spends on Flipcart, Makemytrip and Zomato upto 5000 – which is pretty decent.

Got the offer on my MRCC. I have accumulated around 12000 points on the card so far. Sid, you think its worth to go for this offer rather than waiting for reaching 24000 and going for the gold collection offer and get the Amazon voucher?

18k points for amazon voucher is a reachable one for you, hardly 3-6 months away.

      So, ideally “no”.

I have around 150000 worth platinum charge points.Any good suggestions on redemption to get maximum value on them?

Hey Kapil, Best is to transfer points to Bonvoy or air miles. From there you can derive value from 0.50p to as high as 3-4 Rs per MR point.

These statement credits or Amazon voucher won’t fetch good returns.

I won’t recommend transferring to Marriott if you are planning for a holiday in India. For Indian properties, paying via cash is the best option. For Eg: ITC Goa would need 1.2L points for a 2 night stay. But, If paid in Cash it’s just 46K. If you need to buy 1.2L marriot points, you will have to spend more than $1250. I beleive we can derive value only if we are going to book a international property.

Not necessary. I booked Sheraton Srinagar for 50000 points.( One night free with 4 nights). The cost of the room per night was 12500 plus tax. So it would have been around 72k for a five night stay. Buying the points cost you 46k

I got the 5K offer on MRCC. So can I go for the Gold collection and still get these 5K? Gold collections are 18K and 24K points. If yes, then it will reduce the actual points consumed to 13K and 19K. Anyone has any clarity. Their website says nothing about it clearly that these redemptions are included or excluded.

Now Platinum Travel card is providing Taj vouchers at value of 0.5Rs per point in denominations of 5k. This is just double than the statement credit(0.25Rs/point).
