3% Fuel Cashback with American Express Credit Cards

By | April 8, 2017

American Express is running a nice promotion recently that gives 3% Cashback on Fuel transactions with all American Express Credit Cards. On top of it, they Amex don’t charge you 2.5% surcharge when you fuel at HP Petrol pumps as HP & Amex are in partnership. That’s kind of 5.5% value back and its an impressive number in credit card industry.

My Experience with Amex Fuel Cashback offer:

I’ve never used my credit or debit card in recent times for fuel purchases mainly because almost all cards i have donot reverse the service tax taken on surcharge and also reward points aren’t added. So i always prefer to use Cash rather charging on the card and wasting money.

But Amex finally made me to use my card for fuel expenses, here on i’ll be directing all my fuel expenses to Amex until 28th Feb 2017. I’ve started using my American Express Platinum Travel card for fuel and i’m already seeing the cashback kicking in. Check out the transactions below which i did to fuel my Bike & Car in HP fuel pumps.

Its sure a lucrative offer for those who spend a lot on fuel. The 3% reward rate is in par with Uber premium cards, still most don’t provide reward points on fuel txn’s. So Amex is the only best credit card in India for fuel transactions for now.

I wish to charge 1.5L on the card to grab Rs.4,500 Cashback and store the fuel somewhere 😉 Share your thoughts in comments below.

I did not receive any email on this. That’s weird, Amex keeps on not sharing these offers until you call up their customer care.
They recently had a ‘Open Door’ offer as well, wherein a transaction of 500+ rs with a list of vendors, would get you a BookMyShow Voucher of 500Rs. Came to know about it only last week after I had called up Amex Customer Care for some query. Do they have some kind of qualification policy for sending across these emails to the card users?

Also, Siddharth, any idea if these offers work on Amex Co-branded ICICI cards as well. I have both so can take the advantage two times if this is valid 😀

True, Open door offer was there as well, but its relatively a small promo. I didn’t get notification for that as well.
Maybe they’re targeting particular segment of customers.

I don’t think it will be applicable with co-branded cards as these cashback’s are solely issued by Amex.

well this is indeed great. Standard chartered titanium already gives me 2.5% waiver + 2.5% cashback on all petrol pumps so I used to use it for the purpose. But since this offer I have also started to look out for HP petrol pumps and swipe my Amex card there in.

PS – Sid there are a lot of cards offering fuel surcharge waiver, if not cashback. I wonder with your portfolio of credit cards how come you have none!

PS – my migration is not because of only additional 0.5% cash back. It is because additionally:
      1. Standard chartered cash back is conditional – minimum swipe value of Rs. 750 and max Rs. 4000. Here there is no such limit.
      2. Cash back isn’t posted as credit directly into the statement. It is posted in a separate cashback portal from where the cashback needs to be manually redeemed as cash for it to reflect as credit in the statement. Amex cashback is as easy as it shows in Sid’s snapshot of the statement

Yes, Amex has no hidden terms in this promotion and hence gives peace of mind 🙂

      Yes Kapil,
I do have the surcharge waiver cards, but no RP on that means no savings for using card, also comes with min. spend limits etc which i don’t think is worth spending my time on. So i rather use cash 🙂

      Varun,
I don’t think there is a public link, Amex CC is a call away.

Now, you can see a link with quite large add to register for the fuel cashback promo as soon as you log in to your Amex account. Although I registered few days back when Amex sent a mail with the registration link to me.

Icing on the cake, amex is giving back cash back of 0.75% (which is standard for all cards now as per recent announcement) in addition to cashback of 3% and waiver of 2.5% at HPCL petrol pumps. This makes cashback of ₹3.75% +2.5% waiver.

I have taken a lifetime free Amex Membership Rewards Credit Card. I do 4 swipes of Rs 1000 for petrol in a calendar month at HP. For spending 4000, I get 1000 bonus MR points (worth Rs 250) and a cash back of 3.75% = Rs 150. In effect, I am getting Rs 400 back, on spending Rs 4000 for petrol (10% return). Of course, good things usually don’t last and the 3% offer is ending in June 2017.

I am using Citibank Indian Oil card. It gives 4 points on 150/- spend and surcharge waiver. Points are directly redeemed at petrol pumps when they are greater than 500. At petrol pump 1point is equal to 1 rupee. Reward ratio of 3.3%.

Card is basic and is provided lifetime free or waived after yearly spend of 30k. This is best option provided you have Indian oil petrol pump(with Citibank machine).. Not very hard to find given Indian oil network.

Does Amex 0% Surcharge with HPCL also applicable to co-branded cards like IndusInd ICONIA Amex ??

Well Amex has stopped this offer and almost all cards don’t give points on fuel purchase. The better way is to add money on mobikwik or Paytm wallet and pay at the petrol pumps. Almost all petrol pumps accept Paytm and a few accept mobikwik.
Mobikwik offers some super cash on fuel purchase these days but that is full of so many usage conditions. Even ignoring super cash its worth paying through wallets than paying through cash. At lease you earn points in adding money to the wallets.
